Removing marks off wooden worktop

Hi guys,
We're due to move out of our rented house in a couple of weeks and I had a question about the work tops in the kitchen.
They are solid wood (I think...) and although we have taken pretty good care of them, there is one mark that won't come out. It appears to have been made by an oven tray that's been put down next to the sink and wither burned or marked the surface. The worktop is pretty old and is in by now means perfect condition, however we made this mark and I need to get rid of it or risk the landlords billing us for either a whole new top or for a handyman to come and sand down and varnish the lot.
Is there any way that it is possible to sand a varnish/oil individual patches or is this likely to look rubbish next to the rest of the wood?
Is there any way to post pictures on here as it would be easier to explain if I could show you. There is also a light patch where my OH has tried to clean it a bit too vigorously.
Thanks in advance!

I am no expert at this but all I'd say is to try and find an expert to come and do it. Its requires experience. We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Depends how deep the burn mark goes and if this is indeed a solid wood oiled worktop. I have previously sanded small marks on my wooden worktop and it looked fine afterwards.
After sanding, you will need to oil the sanded area with kitchen worktop oil. If in doubt, re-oil the entire worktop - this will solve your light patch problem too, and the whole thing will look much better. It really doesn't take long to do and worktop oil is pretty cheap from somewhere like IKEA.0
