replacing a stopcock query
Just had a plumber fitting some trv's and the handle of the stopcock sheared off when he was switching the water on/off. I know that this is just unfortunate and was probably down to 'wear and tear'. However, should the plumber accept some responsibility for it? He is asking for £60 to fit a new one in its place. I must…

Wooden, UPVC or Aluminium Windows in New Build?
The Windows in the spec are for Blairs Windows who are vey highly thought of. However in discussion with the builder today he feels we would be better going down the UPVC route (cheaper) or Aluminium route (similar price). His argument is that the maintenance will be an issue on he coming years. Any thoughts?

Building regs -help! Stressed
We put in a full planning application to convert a covered way into a dining room. They approved the plans on what we were doing. The main work was to insulate the single brick walls. The foundations, roof and double glazing were all up to standard. The inspection from the council when the insulation was in went well, no…

Professional applied Scotch Gard carpet protector - does it work?
Does anybody have experience of whether this works? I am considering having it done if it will prevent normal 'wear and tear' dirt (walked in dirt, cats muddy paws), not quite so worried about spills and stains. Also I can find no information on the internet on what chemicals are used, which also puts me off a bit. Any…

Gas fire - condemned by gas safe
I was hoping that someone will be able to help me out on this............. We had a gas fire fitted by a registered gas fitter that was recommended by the shop where we purchased the fire. An initial assessment was made and the fire was fitted. A few weeks later, the frame became scorched and was replaced by the…

(Another) Reclaimed flooring thread!
Hi guys! New(ish) to the forum (I had a previous sign on some years ago, but can't remember it!) so I'll firstly say hi to all! Yes, I know, ANOTHER reclaimed flooring thread, but I can't find anything covering my issue in previous posts. Now, there may be no way to do this, besides trying the obvious, but we have laid…

New kitchen ceiling (Plasterboard) - Cost?
Hi, Unfortunately over the weekend we had an 'incident' where the bath water poured through the floorboards and through the kitchen ceiling. This resulted in a large section of it to eventually fall down! This means I am going to need to get it completely replaced. Any ideas how much this is likely to cost to get someone…

Taking builers to court, rights on completing work in meantime
Hi, We would like some advice on how to proceed in relation to a possible small claims case against our builder. It is a very long story but here goes... We hired a builder, sourced from ‘My Builder’ (operates under a company name but he is a sole trader) to do a small front extension, including works linked to the new…

Wood Stove double duty
Have finally got my wood-burning stove house-trained, after a couple of weeks of it deciding to belch smoke into my bedroom! But I'm thinking what I can use this additional heat-source for (in addition to heating the house, obviously!!). I can put a small pan on the top of the stove to warm soup etc, but thought I'd…

Patio doors and carpet - hardwood infill
We're finally getting our lounge decorated... Yippeeee!!! The carpet fitter has suggested we have a piece of hardwood between the patio doors and the carpet - in the recessed bit. Piece would be 6ins by 8ft. Now my question is, where do I go to get this ? Is this a sensible option? If the carpet goes right upto the doors…

Need some type of barcket to secure bunk beds.... What is best?
Sorry, that should read 'bracket' and I can't edit the title!!! I have just finished assembling some really solid pine bunk beds which we bought privately. The only concern I have, is that the top bunk is just slotted onto dowels coming up from the bottom head and foot boards. There are holes about 4" apart between the top…

Quick Question - Building Control
Curious question we're thinking of having an extension on the back of our property - the size etc means that it wont need planning permission, but will need a building notice (total size 7.5sqm) When it comes to the building inspector coming to the site - Do electrics need to have been completed by a Part P qualified…
