hi guys need some advice
i currently have an electric fire which replaced a gas fire/back boiler so would only need to remove the bricks to expose the opening.
basically want to put a wood burner in place of the electric one.
what would i need to do? the gas supply was totally removed iirc from the fireplace
i currently have a combi boiler and live in rented accomodation (council) so would need permission off them but dont see a problem

The problem being the cost of you doing this! You'd have to get the gas sealed off, take out, generally knock into builders opening, install woodburner and stove etc. Unless you have a spare £3k or so free for the complete works?0

the back boiler and gas have been removed all together by the gas fitters who put the combi in..
the opening from the back boiler in the living room is just breeze blocked up with a vent installed.

Hi,
I am looking to do similar. We have a gas fire but would like to take it out and make it into an open fire. We don't use our gas fire at all, but would like to have a real fire, for a few of the winter nights that are on the way.
The problem i am having is finding the right person to do it.0 -
£200 for a new stove? Now, I'm no engineer but I'm pretty sure this will be super shoddy and won't last long! You haven't had the chimney lined no?including stove!

Do it yourself? I went from this to the below myself and a sweep....... It's brilliant.

basically its to do with size of flue and size of kw stove or fire type required
we had two smoke tests to dicern draw and btw
the sunray stove is fully cast iron and splendid much like the old coalbrookdale
dont get cast iron snobbery
i know my metals, and two years on the stove is good as new no distortions and tip top
if you want to get a smoke test done contact a local chimney sweep and ask their advice, they dont need to sell you anything and have probably seen many homes and chimneys like yours so they know what can and cant happen.totally debt free:j and mortgage free too 20100 -
It's all about efficiency?!
Cast Iron snobbery, I don't think so, the family stove is steel and the other cast iron! It's well known that VERY often the cheap chinese imports are a false economy but evidently you have a good one! Anyway, if you're loving your fire, brilliant. I assume the annual sweep has access to the whole chimney or just a few inches through the pipe from stove?0 -
our fitter fitted a plate with a hinged door to allow easy access to the whole chimney
hetas qualified ususally preffer that
yup i did get a good one and i accept that buying online is a risk but its less overheads and if its chinese i dont mind, confusious was a genius and he too was chinese.
our stove is a multi fuel for logs, coal and peat.
hope the op is not put off buy costs
we know we made the right choice
and have our chimney swept twice a year.totally debt free:j and mortgage free too 20100
