Patio doors and carpet - hardwood infill

We're finally getting our lounge decorated... Yippeeee!!!
The carpet fitter has suggested we have a piece of hardwood between the patio doors and the carpet - in the recessed bit. Piece would be 6ins by 8ft. Now my question is, where do I go to get this ? Is this a sensible option? If the carpet goes right upto the doors it would cost an extra £200
because we would need a 5m carpet and not the 4m.

I plan to fit one in mine, most woodyard / timber merchants do them. I have been along and confused between all the different woods, from oaks to beeches and some darker woods i have never heard of. I am going to opt for a 25mm height as this seems quite popular. Then shall be looking to put some protection on the wood when its down.
As a quick look, here are a few. Most tend to be priced per metre.

Ah, it seems like finding a local sawmill might be the answer. I like the idea of oak - any thoughts on the durability of this. Would I varnish or wax or oil it?0

Local joiner should have a piece knocking about his workshop, allow about 50 quid to have it planed up to size depending on how generous he is!0

I had one originally and it was just a window sill, with the rounded edge to the carpet.
However, I did away with it and carpeted the recess last time.0
