Oh dear - what's happened to my door?
After some excellent ceiling advice on here (thanks guys  ), the room is decorated and the door needed to be planed to size after the new carpet turned out to be much thicker than the original. The trouble is that I seem to have run out of solid door but I still need to take another cm off????? Have I wrecked the…

Black gloss kitchen worktops....NEVER AGAIN
Just before Christmas we decided to spruce our kitchen up a bit - we were quite happy with the layout, doors etc, but we thought we would take off the old matt laminate work surfaces. I loved the look of the black gloss worktops in B&Q, I thought they would look stylish and modern with the colour of our doors and the paint…

Ordering a gas fireplace online - where's the best place??
We have been looking at gas fireplaces, both online and in specialist shops. We have found one we like, but the shops have quoted £1600+ . We have seen the very same fireplace package, with several online companies, for less than £800. Has anyone ordered a fireplace online before? and if so, could you recommend a…

Removing a radiator with a daisy wheel valve
Hi, I want to remove a radiator, but am not sure how to turn the supply off. The locking shield nut just seems to keep turning. I think it is called a daisy wheel. It seems to work on a wedge shape arrangement. You can turn it clockwise forever, but you can only turn it anticlokwise once as it hits a stop. How do you know…

New gas boiler/ heating advice please!!
Hi, we are in the process of buying a 4 bed house with gas warm air heating. The boiler is very old, but working. We want to update it but don't know if we would be better replacing the whole system to radiators and a combi-boiler, or just updating the warm air boiler to a newer more efficient model? yes the cost of…

Which exposed shower?
Have an Aqualisa concealed shower with a Stuart Turner pump. Looking to revamp the ensuite. Ideally we would like a good 'exposed' shower that would use the 'old ' pump ( its not really very old.) The idea of just the pipes coming down the wall like the Visage would be great. but that range comes with a pump. So does…

self-build. would you do it again, or was the hassle not worth the gain?
thoughts on self-build welcome. i have the opportunity to do a self-build. it would mean contracting out to put up a small, two-bedroom chalet-style house, costing approx £70-£80K (that's a guestimate based on two quotes). however, after my own recent experience of builders & kitchen-fitters who ignored what i asked for…

£1800 New Boiler inc Labour
Hi Our 12 year old boiler is kaput. We have had to have it fixed twice in 4 years, not too bad I'm thinking considering how much we use it. However, we had a good plumber out yesterday and he took it apart and sorted it... (bill £60) However, heating and water stopped again last night at 8. We have contacted him again and…

Rusty leaking radiator?
I just noticed a small puddle of water at the bottom of one of my radiators. Looking under it, the dripping is coming from a small brown rusted patch. I don't know anything about central heating repairs. What should I do? I've turned off the water to that radiator and patched up the hole with some tap for now. I checked…

Sensible thoughts?
I'm considering whether to invest over £1,750 in having a wood fired boiler fitted which will hopefully provide enought water for background central heating and a bath every couple of days, and the attendant fuss, mess and cost of acquiring/storing/transporting/loading/cleaning/etc sufficient dry logs or whether to try and…

Cheap (but quality) carpet and/or laminate flooring
Does anywhere know where I can get cheap-ish carpets? I am moving into a new flat and I have received a ridiculous quote (the carpet seemed cheap enough but once fitting/grippers etc. were added it was just silly). In the Manchester area if that helps! Please let me know

Do I Need Fireproof Cement ?
We're having a woodburner but need to extend the hearth, so have a row of "blue " bricks (these are very tough). Does anyone know if we need special cement to point them with ? We know the area round the stove can get pretty hot so maybe ordinary cement won't be suitable. Any suggestions really appreciated.
