Chewing gum on my trousers
I sat on a small piece (of my own) chewing gum - now it's in my black trousers, and I've no idea how to get it out. :o I've read that if you freeze it, and chip it off then wash, it will come out? Is this right? What temperature should I use? Can I add anything to encourage it out? :p

Floor Tile adhesive - Payless or Branded
Hi DIYers I have started to lay tles on the kitchen floor using FOCUS's 'PAYLESS tile adhesive. (apparantly they are going back to the 'payless' name?) At a tenner for a large tub its over half the price of their focus branded adhesive and cheaper still than the Unibond equivilent size. Do you think there is much…

Protection for new shiplap
Hi all. Last summer, the neighbour and I built a slopped roof (timber frame, 20mm ply and bituminous sheets) over our flat roof garages as it did turn out cheaper than re-roofing the whole area. We now have the additional benefit of having storage space in the new void ;) . The verticals were covered horizontaly with…

Built in bed help!
I'm hoping to get rid of a cupboard in my box bedroom. The bottom of the cupboard is the bit that sticks out from the stairs being underneath. Hope you get what I mean I'm hopeless at DIY :o Anyhow I want to change it from a cupboard to a kind of built in bed. This would mean the box bit being the top end of the bed (like…

refinishing an wooden table
About a year ago, we bought a Douglas-fir Wooden furniture (picnic table) online. It has a light brown (see color below) now we want to somehow refinish it and make it look like an old mature wood (dark brown). Any idea how we can achieve the dark color without having an expert do it for us? other than painting it with…

Loft insulation
Hi Having moved into my house recently, I have had a look in the loft. I am not an expert on insulation methods but can see sheets of clear plastic parallell wit the sloping roof with a big gap between the plastic sheeting and the actual roofing tiles. B&Q Kitchen Quote confusion
Evening all, I'm wondering if anyone can shed a bit of light in my direction please. We've had a kitchen quote from B&Q and they've given us an itemised price list. I've just been through and added every price on the list up and it comes to £772, except that their total is £1465.25  I've checked the quantities of…

advice on making slate path in garden
Hi Parts of our back garden get very wet/boggy when it rains, to counteract this and to make things a little easier I was thinking of making a slate path around the edges of the lawn (with raised sleeper beds on one side which are already there and lawn on the other with some kind of stone edging). My plan was to dig down…

Can I get black filler for bathroom vinyl floor tiles
Just done dark granite colour vinyl floor tiles in a white bathroom. It was certainly hard going cutting all the shapes out and there are a couple of spots where a bit of black filler would hide the poor workmanship. Any tips and I am not going to redo the tiles in question as I am sick to death with it now :-)

Paint units, new units, or new kitchen entirely!
I have a kitchen which I don't like. I have painted the tiles white which has made it better. But I don't like the units, and the ends have stupid open units with just shelves which are a waste of space (the kitchen isn't big). I don't want to spend a lot of money, so I was considering just painting it, but think that may…

Collapsed Soak Away Drain
I have a large hole that has appeared in my garden, about 50cm deep and it looks like it spreads out underneath the soil, about 40cm x 50 cm wide at the top. It's in line with the soak away drain from my house about 3 metres away and as we've been having a lot of water recently I think that the cause could be the drain.…

Felt Shingles For Shed Roof
I have bought a shed, but the felt for the roof is very thin A colleague has recommended that I just get it covered in ‘proper’ felt rather than the flimsy felt provided. I was going to do this, but came across felt shingles on the Wickes web site which looked good Do these do a good job ? Are they easily fitted, by a…

How do I protect wooden bathroom sink unit from water
Hi I refurbed my bathroom 12 months ago and bought a wooden cabinet from Next for the basin to sit on (Aspden sink unit for reference). I've really tried to look after it but after 12 months there's a few water marks on there and I'm not sure what to use to protect it/make it more waterproof without altering the colour. I…
