refinishing an wooden table

About a year ago, we bought a Douglas-fir Wooden furniture (picnic table) online. It has a light brown (see color below) now we want to somehow refinish it and make it look like an old mature wood (dark brown). Any idea how we can achieve the dark color without having an expert do it for us? other than painting it with dark brown right away.

Hi Mel,
You should get more help with this on the In My Home board so I've moved your thread across.

Could you just use a darker wood stain over the top?0

You could either use a woodstain or dark varnish - I acquired an old piece of furniture which I sanded down but there are black marks in the wood where someone has tried to stain it so I got some Ronseal Quick Drying varnish in Dark Oak and the item of furniture looks fab.0

Noted. I'll buy a dark varnish and see how it goes. Wish me luck.0
