Loft insulation

Hi
Having moved into my house recently, I have had a look in the loft. I am not an expert on insulation methods but can see sheets of clear plastic parallell wit the sloping roof with a big gap between the plastic sheeting and the actual roofing tiles. I am assuming this is for insulation fibre wool to be placed into. However there is none there.
Instead there is some kind of wooden flooring in the loft which I was told was the insulation. Is this correct. In that case do I not need any of that wool stuff in the loft?!?!
Thanks

Neither wood nor plastic sheeting in my experience will provide much in the way of insulation. What is between the wood floor and the ceiling underneath ?
HOw old is the house etc.0 -
House was built circa. 1930s.
The plastic sheeting as far as I can see was just something to hold in the wool stuff.
The wooden sheeting on the floor may not be just wood, but it is solid with the appearance of wood. Someone told me that it was a form of insulation though (maybe called fibre glass wood). I really am stuck as to whether my home is properly insulated.0 -
Sounds like the rafters were stuffed with wool or whatever at some stage, and when the attic was boarded this was moved to between the joists. You need to take up one of the boards, usually small enough to have got thru the loft door..chipboard and screwed.0

I wouldnt be too concearned about insulating the plastic sheeting/loft roof.
I'd be more inclined to check that there is a good thick layer of fibre glass insulation underneath the wood on the loft floor.
Lift a few sheets of wood up from random points in the loft to check. If there is no insulation under the wood then lift all the wood and put down that £3 / roll stuff that B&Q have on offer.0
