Lots of tiling and tile paint questions (bathroom)
I would love to hear people's advice on this as I am a complete newcomer to this sort of thing and do not want to stuff up! We are having both of our bathrooms re-done in a couple of weeks. They are both ensuites - one is a small shower room and the other has a bath. We want to re-tile both and our original idea was that…

Boundary nightmare!
Hi, I was wondering if someone could help with a question. We recently bought a small semi, and there was a short brick wall on our land at the front of the house which we owned separating the land to the side of the house. This land is owned by someone else, however we have right of way down it to the side of our house.…

Problems with Builder's Invoice
I'm in the middle of a long process to renovate my house. So far it's been going well and the builder seems a good 'un. However, he's given me an invoice for an interim payment. I told him after the last one that I couldn't pay him any more until the money from re-mortgaging my house came through (and that was held up…

Experiment: Can I furnish my home for free?
I sold my 1-bedroom flat a while ago, and the FTB who bought it also bought the majority of my furniture and all my white goods (for a fair price). So, on Friday, I finally moved into my enormous Edwardian 3-bedroom 4-reception room house with more space than I know what to do with, and no furniture! I asked for the…

Fusebox upgrade
I've got an old style fuse box that uses wired fuses, I would like to upgrade it but not at the expense of replacing the whole board for a modern RCD consumer unit. I vaguely recall a friend upgrading his wired fuses for a trip switch set up which slotted straight in to the old style board. Does anyone know of these or am…

Council builders from hell.
We've been waiting weeks now for the council to finish cladding the outside of our house, with some fiberglass sheets covered with resin then pebbled. Trouble is cracks are forming around the back of the house. and the more they point them the more the cracks spread. They have told us that its normal and there is no cause…

Bathroom ceramics (bogs,basins)
Next time you want a WC, pan, hand basin, and you visit the local bathroom showroom, clock the owners wheels, i bet its a lexus or bmw 4x4 why? cos they get 80% of the RRP in the catalogues they show you, then seek out real trade sources, i was shocked at such discounts whilst delivering such goods recent.

Shower from combi boiler - pressure too high
I have what seems to be the opposite to most people's problem. We have a bath/tap mixer type shower over the bath, which was given a new lease of life when we removed our hot water tank and had a Vaillant combi boiler fitted. The boiler is fantastic and the hot water flow amazing, but the water coming from the shower head…

Carpeting my bedroom
Hello, I am in a rented house with beautiful floorboards throughout - but a freezing cold bedroom. My landlord is happy for me to carpet the bedroom (baby on the way, night time feeds etc, brr!) but how best to do this without creating work later on - e.g. sticky floorboards after removing the carpet... Also, as we might…
