Shower from combi boiler - pressure too high

Options
I have what seems to be the opposite to most people's problem.

We have a bath/tap mixer type shower over the bath, which was given a new lease of life when we removed our hot water tank and had a Vaillant combi boiler fitted.

The boiler is fantastic and the hot water flow amazing, but the water coming from the shower head actually hurts because the pressure is so high.

Can anyone recommend a particular shower head which will cope with the pressure better (I have tried all the adjustments on our current shower head). Or is there a way of reducing the pressure - simply turning down the taps makes very little difference other than when turned down too far the boiler cuts off and it goes cold.

A second issue is that we also have a Mira 8, shower valve in another bathroom that I am told will not cope with the higher pressure for very long. Anyone know a way of making this last, or can it be directly replaced with anything similar without disturbing the existing tiles etc?

  • The packaging says whether it is suitable. If you go into wickes they normally have an info board for each product. As well as looking for the words "combi boiler" sometimes it will say "for high pressure systems". Here's one http://www.wickes.co.uk/invt/190460?htxt=6YwZAISW1i5OgIudElUVh4%2BI3KMD0YlK3aWM7EPIBJQVvJOxcInvY1H4JwBcSZ2MIfCIMv2VNq1z%0AWJ9bQPNXrg%3D%3D
Sometimes lidl do one for the bath and one for the wall at around £25.

Anyone know if the type of shower hose will make any difference? I thinkthere are dirreferent bore sizes for these, but don't know what differenece this makes.

I think this will be insignificant. Larger or more holes in the shower head will reduce the power of the jet. This is the same priciple as when you turn the hose pipe on and the water dribles out of end, put a nozzle on or partially block the end of the pipe and you get a powerful jet.

If the hot and cold feeds to the taps have isolation or ballofix valves on them, try partly shutting them off to reduce the flow.

Alternitively you can get flow reducers for float valves and electric showers etc. One of these may work in the pipe.
