Cordless iron
I have to replace my iron and cannot find what I want. I want it to have a ceramic/enamel/duraglide base (rather than steel or teflon) and I would ideally like it to be cordless. This is the part I am having difficulty with. Have cordless irons gone out of fashion? They probably don't work as well as corded ones, but I'd…

Should I leave my boiler on continuously?
Sorry if this is a silly question. My husband insists that we will save energy if we have our boiler come on only twice a day, once in the morning (for showers), and again in the early evening (for washing up dishes). It is on for an hour each time. My opinion is that we use up more energy this way because it requires more…

Double Glazing
Hello all, Want to get some double glazing installed but thought I'd ask a couple of questions before I go to get quotes: 1. For anyone who has had new windows installed - how much mess will there be? Will I need to redecorate all rooms? I also have pebble dash and don't really want to get it all redone as it's extra…

Washing Machine Warranty
I have just purchased a new washing machine from John Lewis. My machine has just died on me after seven years. They asked if I wanted to extend the warranty (it comes with a three year free one) and I said no because I never used the warranty on the other one. Is there a company that I can myself purchase a warranty from…

Help to open a 3-digit combination padlock
I've a 3-digit combination padlock, the code of which I've forgotten. It's locked to one of the zip rings of a suitcase my brother gave me many years ago (he cannot remember the code either!). The suitcase itself is open, but I cannot lock it through the zip rings (the only way to lock it) unless I remove this lock - if…

X-Tex for removing Artex
Hello, I am new to this forum, new to DIY, in fact new to everything. Myself and my gf have just moved into our first house. It's a 1970's 3 bed terrace that needs a lot of TLC (that's why we bought it). The first job on our list is to remove all of the artex. Every bit of ceiling, both upstairs and down is artexed. First…

Dimmer switch not dimming
We have a set of 4 halogen spotlights in our kitchen operated by a dimmer switch. Last week one of the spotlight bulbs blew and now the dimmer switch doesn't dim, just turns the lights on and off. Is this likely to be something simple that I can fix myself or should I get an electrician in to repair it? Thanks in advance…

Flooring help, suggestions!
Hi :) We will be moving into new accomodation soon, and for the first time ever we will have to put in our own floorcoverings. We've always lived with carpets (not of our choice) in our rented accomodation, but having the choice soon I'm not sure I want a carpet now. Our budget won't be huge, it has to be realistic with…

I want to inject some colour into my lounge
My lounge is very neutral in colours, ie cream/beige walls, carpets, curtains. My sofa is a pale green and I currently have cream cushions. I'm pretty happy with it all, it's modern and clean but I feel I need some colour but tasteful. I don't want to add dark curtains as I dont want to close the room down, it's not that…

Cleaning and Sealing Black Limestone
Its proving quite hard to get this floor to look clean after having it laid and grouted, we have tried commerical limestone cleaning products from places like Topps Tiles but they don't seem to have helped. Best way to seal a solid oak floor
Was thinking of using Ronseal's Diamond Hard Wax in Natural at £41 for 2.5 litre tin. Apparently it enhances the natural colour of the oak and protects it from any wear or stains, etc. Had anyone used it - or any other product which they could recommend.
