Help to open a 3-digit combination padlock

I've a 3-digit combination padlock, the code of which I've forgotten.

It's locked to one of the zip rings of a suitcase my brother gave me many years ago (he cannot remember the code either!). The suitcase itself is open, but I cannot lock it through the zip rings (the only way to lock it) unless I remove this lock - if you know what I mean.

Each ring is numbered 0-9, so there are 1000 possibilities. The trouble is I've tried them all & still cannot open it!

What are these locks like (I haven't used one for ages)? When I get to the correct combination, do I need to pull or push or should the lock just snap open automatically? Or, are all the above a possibility?

I realise I could just break the lock, but it seems a solid, quality one & would like to reuse it as far as possible. G
