Buying an apartment at a discount?
I have been interested in buying an apartment as an investment through a company called Challoner Properties of York, where they obtain a discount from the builders then charge a finders fee of 3%, thus leaving the buyer with an attractive equity of, say,£30,000. Sounds good, and I could afford it, but with so many…

Sorry for starting a few new threads around the same subject!! As a landlord is it worthwhile to have insurance protection regarding rent? Does insurance cover when tenants do not pay? Does it cover periods where the house is not occupied? ie i have no tenants? Who do landlords recommend for insurance?

Home Buying Advice Needed
Good Afternoon MSE Need some home buying advice. Interested in a property that has an public access alley running along one side and a number of council garages situated to one corner. These are a concern to me. Has anyone had any good/bad/indifferent experiences they could share in living beside these features?

Buying a house - help needed!
Question for all clever MSE's out there!. My wife and I own our current house outright and we are looking to buy a house in Southern Ireland (or even this country). What we can't figure out is how to buy a house (we have very little savings) before selling our current house. Is it possible to get some sort of mortgage,…

How to value a long leasehold
I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience of this situation. I am currently renting a basement of someone's house - it's not as bad as it sounds as the house is on a slope so it's a basement from the front but ground floor at the back. I want to buy the basement, but understand that I can only buy a long leasehold,…

Getting A Survey Sorted...
I'm hoping some kind peeps will be able to help a FTB who isn't entirely sure how to go about completing a survey. As far as I was aware (after reading some magazine articles and the like) you would generally use the surveyor that the bank you're borrowing from uses. Then it's up to you to ask them for either the…

Survey - cancel under Sale of Goods & Services Act?
Hi all, Three weeks ago, I arranged for an independent survey to be done on the house we are buying, to check for damp and woodworm etc. This was to cost £30 + VAT, but would not be charged until the report was sent out to me. We arranged for the surveyor to come round on Monday 10th October, and the woman I spoke to said…

Tenancy(Rental) Admin Fee Shams
OK here's one on behalf of MoneySavers who rent their accommodation: There is an enourmous variance in Estate Agent / Property Managment 'admin fees', coupled by an utter lack of information on what are the criteria of those mysterious background checks (...not to mention also lack of evidence that checks were really…

Ex-council / Ex-local authority flats
This is a general query that I've had for a long time now. Why is it that ex-council flats sell at a discount to regular flats in the same area (in some cases, these discounts are as sizeable as 20-25%, esp my area in the Docklands)? Is it because there is a general stigma associated with these houses, that their upkeep…

Help please item missing from house.
We have just bought a house yesterday. We went in today to clean it and a welsh dresser that was supposed to be in the sale has gone! It was in the estate agents details and the vendor told us as soon as we walked into the kitchen that it was included in the sale as she felt it went with the kitchen. This was without us…

Financial advisor has recommended we get one of those credit checks that you pay for, as this should tell us the problem. What do you think?…
