Last minute Feed-in tariff applications
For anyone who ends up desperate for time - I've just had this email from my FIT provider (or should that be purchaser?), Good Energy https://www.goodenergy.co.uk: One-off weekend opening on the 10th and 11th of December The Government recently announced reductions in the Feed-in Tariff for rewarding small independent…

Silly solar question for the day
(I'm due to have a RaR installation next week, so getting curious as to how it all works) If we had a power cut on a sunny day, would I still have electricity in my house? (I'm not as stupid as that question makes me sound, I presume the inverter is powered by the mains, but I just thought I'd ask...) Cheers! Matt

Insulating attic and cavity wall
Hello folks, a very simple query I suspect. 2 issues. I plan on replacing the insulation in my attic. Essentially I have wool in between rafters at the moment - about 100mm installed when the house was built 15 years ago. The wool insulation has been ruffled about as we dealt with a rat problem that's now been sorted. My…

Sunrise Energy Solutions
Recently I had a quote of £7200 for 2.25kwh solar system for my house. Today I had a call from Sunrise Energy Solutions offering to do the same for about £6,500. I have Googled SES but I am not getting much back on them. Can anyone tell me if they are safe? They are located in the West Midlands. I got this from one search:…

FIT's - Wind AND Solar?
I already have solar PV (3.87Kw system) but have been approached by a company regarding a wind turbine. Similar to rent a roof but for a turbine - they are talking about a 5Kw one where basically they get the FIT and we get free electric with a "right to buy" at any time option too. Does anyone know if its possible to get…

Solar installation hanger bolts - am I being had?
Hi, The installation of my solar array commenced this morning with an immediate problem. Once the guys got up onto the roof they decided that they can't use hanger brackets and will have to use hanger bolts. The use of bolts will necessitate the drilling of the roof tiles ... not what I wanted. The reason that they say…

Heat Pumps - domestic install

Keeping warm this winter....cheaply
Hi, i was wondering if anyone had any tips on keeping warm this winter without putting the heating on? We are very lucky to have a log fire which we use, but do you have any other tips? I have blankets on the sofas to stop them getting covered in dog hairs but does keep you warm too. Thanks :)

Swimming Pool ASHPs
Hello All I have just spent a few hours reading MSE threads on ASHPs and get the idea that they should not be used to replace domestic gas boilers. I have read that the COP of condensing gas boilers can be as high as 2.3 . manufactures of swimming pool type heat pumps are claiming a COP of 3 or even 4. My interest in…

Completing the FiT application form
My solar PV system is due to be installed next week and once the installation is completed then it will be necessary to make the FiT application and since British Gas is currently my energy supplier then it may make sense to make the FiT application with them. I also understand that with British Gas it is possible to make…

The Watercone - turning salt water into fresh water the easy way
This intrigues me. It's low tech and if it does what it says on the tin, very very useful and green indeed. http://www.blog.thesietch.org/2007/08/13/watercone-ingenious-way-to-turn-salt-water-to-fresh-water/

Would you invest in nuclear fusion?
I see that the Leonardo Corporation - the Andrea Rossi company - has a 1Megawatt unit for sale and a 5kW unit 'coming soon'. That's a 5kW home nuclear power plant were talking about! Unfortunately they don't (yet) run hot enough to produce electricity but they would make a nice central heating system.…

Solar Panel system advice really appreciated please
We were debating getting a system installed and thought we had missed the boat with the changes... But thanks to contacts we have managed to source a system that would be up and running before the changes??? This would be a large part of our savings gone but hopefully a good investment for the future. Plus I have always…
