Would you invest in nuclear fusion?

Options
I see that the Leonardo Corporation - the Andrea Rossi company - has a 1Megawatt unit for sale and a 5kW unit 'coming soon'. That's a 5kW home nuclear power plant were talking about! Unfortunately they don't (yet) run hot enough to produce electricity but they would make a nice central heating system.

I've been following the rossi ecat since the beginning of the year, after originally hearing about it a couple of years ago.

Was going to post about it on here, but didn't want to suffer the likely barrage of "IT'S A SCAM!!" replies from the 10 minute research armchair experts.

Wouldn't take 10 minutes research to find that the laws of physics haven't changed. Amusing website though.

Well, let's be honest, the 1mw unit does look a bit comical. A bit like a steel portacabin with some pipes. Though I can't help thinking if it is a scam it's a very elaborate one. The purchaser of the 1mw (claimed) working unit is apparently the US Navy. If true I can't imagine they'd be spending two million on a very expensive kettle.

Can't wait for the Mr Fusion device from Doc Browns DeLorean to become commercially available. What could you do with 1.21gigawatts or more to the point ... think of the FiTs income at 43.3p, have to be quick though only 30days left to get the system up and running.

I would think that it would be quite obvious ;) .... The 1.2GW would be required to fire the lasers to create the fusion reaction in the 5kW version of the Leonardo unit ..... :rotfl: ..... now that's what I really call efficient :D

Anyway LENR (Cold fusion) info here if anyone wants to do some background reading ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_fusion

Regrettably there have been many people promising free energy devices over the years.
Some have even had credible results, apparantly, till closer investigation occurs.
When an independent source can verify the claims, from a device under their control, that they can verify no external or stored internal power source, then I may start to be less sceptical.
I note that I'm still going ahead with the purchase of an expensive heat-pump in the next couple of months.

On a more mundane level, I have often wondered if high level nuclear waste (fission products) kept under water could be used for a local heating system. Of course there would be an outcry, but it seems of waste of 'free' heat to vent the heat to the atmosphere as at present. All you would need is a secondary cooling circuit which then is piped around the local towns. The central 'boiler' could be kept at one of the numerous local military installations.
