gas meter readings
I have received a letter from my energy provider explaining that mistakes have been made when calculating my gas bill and that over a period of 4.5 years we have underpaid by £2000. Apparrently they have been calculating it based on 4 units instead of 5 all this time. They have written off £1340 of this because they accept…

EDF Price Protection 2009 Coming To An End?
A year ago I put my Mum's gas and electricity accounts onto the above (at the time prices were soaring and it seemed like a good precaution). This tarrif is now coming to an end on 31/10, does anyone know if she will just be transferred onto the EDF Standard tarrif, if so presumably I can then move her again straightaway…

standby saver plugs
I have been looking at the standby saver plugs for use with the TV etc. BUT if I turn the electricity off on the 4 way plug switch I use, is this any different to using a saver plug? I always switch off the computer and periferals early evening switching on again in the morning. So the PC etc is on standby when not in use…

Crazy gas meter readings. Plan of attack?
Hell all, I'm looking for a bit of advice on how to broach the subject of a crazy gas bill with my gas company and possibly Landlord. I live in a one bedroom rented flat and have recently had a gas bill that's far larger than I expect. I'm quite bad at the switching and frenetically sending meter readings off but I know…

However when you actual go into all the fine detail (i.e. Price per until of Gas & Electricity, Standing charges,..) you find out you are best off where you…

I am new to the site - so hope I am posting this in the correct place. I have just taken out a service contract for central heating with British Gas. I was told that the cover was for ALL PARTS AND LABOUR. I wasn't told about any exceptions or exclusions - but having called them out was told that the system is full of…

Getting meters swapped over from pre-paid
Evening all just come off the phone to Scottish power with regards to having the pre-paid gas and electric meters taken out of the flat I move into on Monday. Online meter readings for southern electric.
I have noticed some people on the boards sort their gas and elecric online and give monthly or weekly meter readings so they can see what the usage is or look at a graph to work out if they are using more or less than the previous months. Can this be done with Southern electric, which is who i am with, but i give readings…

What tariff do you join when fixed rates end?
Hi guys. I jumped on the British Gas Price Guarantee (December 2009) tariff in July 2008. As the fixed rate period is getting close to ending I was wondering which tariff British Gas would move me onto. I have looked through all the paperwork they sent me and can't find any mention of what happens when the fixed rate ends.…

I've lowered my consumption yet my direct debit has gone up
Over the last 6 months I've used as little gas and electric as possible. During this time I haven't had the heating on, nor the hot water (I only have showers and just boil the kettle once a day to wash up). As a result I got npower to reduce my direct debit from £80 a month to £40 a month. The amount I've been spending on…

re: First time buyer - house will be empty for 1-2 months
Hi, We are first time buyers who have a completion date on 21st October. We are however not moving into the property until January - however we know that we have to arrange gas & electric supply. Do we just sign up normally online (inc the possibility to get cashback), or would it be better to phone up? Obviously by phone…

Large storage heater vs small thermostatic fan heater
I work from home and spend most the day indoors in a 1 bed flat. My flat has storage heaters installed in all the rooms and last winter I only used the main one in the living room. However my electricity use rocketed, from using 5 units per day the rest of the year to 20 in winter, just because of this one storage heater.…

Shared house and paying the bills
Currently the bills at the property I live in are in my name. I've lived in the house for two years after a house mate who never paid the bills. And a bill I couldn't afford to pay at the end of the term I had the meters switched to pre payment to pay off the debt which I did fairly quickly. Now that house mate is gone and…

Help - they mixed my rates up!
Spoke to our gas & electricity supplier today because our tariff is running out soon and the guy noticed that for the year that we have been with them, they have mixed up our day and night rate readings. they have charged us night rate (cheaper) for our day unit use. They say that they are going to take 2 weeks to work out…
