Can anyone advise how notice is worked out please? My contract says 'a month'. So if I handed my notice in on 23rd April, when should I expect my last day to be? Thanks in advance.:)

Minimum hours at work?
I have a part-time job at a bar but no set hours or days to work (my contract doesn't state any hours either, it just says part-time) but over the past two months I have been regularly sent home after only one or two hours of working due to the bar being very quiet, I'm usually rostered to work five or six hours a day over…

Asked to cover a shift at work while on holiday
Is it ok for my boss to ring me while I'm taking paid holiday (time off) to ask if I'm willing to come in to work a shift? To clarify I work as a care worker on the night shift in an elderly care home. I generally work 44hr sometimes more due to the horrendous sickness as of late within my workplace. I often will pick up…

New Post/Continuous Service
I've worked for the same company for 21 years. On the 9th I started a new post which means I now work 2 x 12.5 hrs (not 25hrs) and I received a contract for the new post which had the following dates under Period of Continuous Service: (a) Statutory Employment Protection, Redundancy Selection and Notice to Terminate…

I sent back a form confirming back details and the likes and was told a contract will soon follow. Last week I was getting a bit nervous as I heard…

Getting impatient after interview
I interviewed for a job six weeks ago. The interview was arranged by the company’s HR department and the hiring manager is someone I know from a previous role and I feel the interview went very well. She (hiring manager) said she’d get back in touch with me by the end of the following week. I didn’t hear from her, and it…

Job agency confusion
Hi, After a bit of advise as I'm sooooo confused. I was made redundant APRIL 2017, I went straight into a new job and worked there for 3 weeks but it wasn't for me. A job came up at our local council as a gardener but it was via a recruitment agency. I left my job and signed for the agency in June 2017. Since then I have…

Personal Car Use for work purposes
Hi All, As you can see from the above title, I was just wondering if work can force me to use my personal car for work purposes. I am in an office based job that as part of the job requires a site visit or two every so often. I have mentioned that my car is not insured for business use many times. I was told to then add it…

Unpaid Invoice
I've been doing a bit of self employed work in the evenings because we need the extra cash - all documented and all tax paid. I provide a service which, as is the norm in this industry, the client settles at a later date after receiving an invoice. This is usually by bank transfer these days, but occasionally by cheque.…

Civil Service Hire Cars
A friend who's a Civil Servant had to have a hire car through work for a recent 6hr round trip for 3 people. For their (or UK plc's) £100+ they were given a battered 3dr Astra GTC, 16 plate with 58k on the clock vs my companys rate (albeit from a different rental company within 200mtrs) of £48 for the same period for a…

Sent in sick note - do I need to phone every day
Hello I've been off sick from work since last week and got a sick note from my doctor on Monday and sent it to my manager. He has just rang me and said I need to ring in every day, it just stressed me out. As I'm signed off for 4 weeks, IMO they can ring me up weekly and see how I am if the wish and I can call them a day…

Additional Payments for Overtime

PAYE Employment + Contracting
Hello, I've recently started doing contracting alongside my PAYE full-time employment. Obviously my tax is deducted automatically on PAYE at the 20% rate. However, the Contracting work has actually taken me up into either the 40% or maybe 50% bracket. I would need to check this to be sure though, it's one or the other. How…

NHS job offering less than minimum wage
Hello everyone, Bit confused here, so I'm probably missing something obvious. I got invited for an interview as a receptionist in a surgery. The position is part time, with an advertised salary of 8580 for "22 hours per week, worked on a rota basis" (as per nhs jobs page). If I break that down to per hour it comes to £7.50…

Part time contract being made to work full time
My other half recently started working for ATOS signing a part time contract, needed for childcare. Originally, she was told she would have to go through the two week training full time, which she passed. After starting the role properly though she's been given conflicting messages about when she can start part time; being…
