Paraplanning learning resources
Hi all, I want to pursue a career in financial planning, and ideally start as a paraplanner. I have a business degree but no direct experience in financial planning. However, I have held general business advisor roles which I hope will help me transition into a financial advisor one day. I'm applying for jobs but I'd like…

Pension contributions dispute with employer
Back in 2006 I was transferred under TUPE from a public sector body to a voluntary organisation. Much discussion was held as the voluntary organisation made it clear that should the transfer happen there would need to be a discussion as it would not be able to match the terms of the conditions we had at that point. The…

discretionary sick pay only for some?
So if the contract/handbook says full sick pay is at company's discretion, that means it's basically up to the company whether they pay you for a specific period of being ill. I understand that this makes sense if managers think someone's not being truthful for example. But in this particular case there are some employees…

The law on a reasonable amount of overtime
Does anyone know what the law says is a reasonable amount of overtime? My company often 'forces' overtime and if you do not work it you face disciplinary action. They refuse to tell us what they consider, or what the law considers to be a reasonable amount. Any help or advice is appreciated.

Notice period query
A colleague of mine is intending to move department and was told that she would have to hand her notice in for our department and then serve the notice before moving into the other department (separate budgets etc.). Fair enough, her department needs time etc. However, since the notice has been served, they've been offered…

OH's boss disclosing personal medical information
My OH is having a few tests done at the moment, and we are a bit concerned about the outcome of them. She has had to leave work a bit early, and the boss has told a few staff members exactly what the tests are for. She has confronted her directly and said that she doesn't want it happening any more. Since that happened,…

Backdated pay issue affects pension?
Slightly complicated issue and I'm really wondering if anyone knows where I would be best off looking for advice. I worked at the BBC, and I strongly suspect that I may have been affected by the pay unfairness that's currently in the news. Now, I left 11 years ago so I don't expect any sort of backdating in terms of actual…

Agency/Permanent Work?
I've been weighing up this job that I seen advertised through an agency, advertised as being permanent - full time, this will probably sound like a stupid question, but are permanent jobs that are advertised through an agency, actually through them, or are you through the actual employer? I've always been a bit skeptical…

Claiming business mileage
My company pay me 25p per business mile (I use my own car) and I know I’m allowed to claim 45p for the first 10,000 miles. I have 25,000 business miles recorded from Jan 2017 to Jan 2018 so am I right in thinking 10,000 x 0.20p = £2,000 is what I can claim? Thanks in advance.

Applying via agent vs applying directly
There are a few jobs I am currently considering to put my application for. I ma however unsure whether I should go and apply directly with he companies I am interested in or via recruitment agencies. Ther are obvious pros of doing it via recruiters. Firstly a recruiter would be able to tell me what is the reward package…
