Employer talking of reducing hours,

Looking for some advice but not sure where to go, my employer has just made mass redundancies, theres know talk of hours been cut i currently work 20 hours theres talk that hours would be cut to 12 hours i am just about managing, on 20 hours i am also a carer for my adult daughter, no other children live at home, the only option i can see is to start looking for anther job that fits in with me caring for my daughter or hang on and see what happens and then leave,
Others workers have said that if my employer does reduce hours then they have to offer you redundancy, but surly that can't be right because theres still a job but with less hours,
thanks for any advice

Are you getting Carers Allowance? At the moment I would doubt you are as you exceed the £116 a week income threshold to be allowed to but when you drop to 12hrs you would be eligible. That would give you an extra £62.70 a week which is equivalent to around 8.3hrs a week at national minimum wage thus making up the shortfall in pay if your hours are reduced. Even if you have a partner who works you can get that as long as you're looking after your daughter for at least 35hrs a week.
You may also be entitled to other help such as council tax benefit and housing benefit if you rent. Have you been on entitledto.co.uk to check what benefits you can get?
As for redundancy the other workers are partially correct. When the employer wants to change your hours then unless you agree to the change they have to make your position redundant. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. That final statement is not entirely true. It may be true. But there are potentially other actions that the employer can take without having to offer redundancy. Without knowing exactly what they will do and how, it is impossible to accurately say whether the post will be deemed redundant in law.0

If they've already been laying people off, I can't image you'll be offered more than statutory redundancy. How much you do get depends on how old you are any how long you've been with your employer (under 2 years and you don't qualify), but unless you're nearing retirement and/or have been there many years, it ain't the money spinner some people think it is.
Better than nothing yes, passport to riches, no - you'll probably need to find something else PDQ, so you might as well start looking now, regardless of what happens in your current workplace.0 -
thank you for all the replys things haven't been good for over a year, just found out that they are now having to ask the bank for a loan to make some improvements, i am 48 and have been with the company for 13 years, thing its time to move on.

So you'll be in line for 19 and a half week's pay, should the worst happen. Bear in mind that your weekly pay will be capped at £489 and the maximum statutory redundancy pay you can get is £14,670.
In which case, it might be worth hanging on and seeing what happens (or even volunteering for it), but also starting to look for something else now too, so you have as many options open to you as possible.0 -
