December Bonus has been deducted in Jan Pay

Hi All,
If you could help me understand below that would be great thanks.
I work in sales and it states in my contract that I will receive commission of x% for all sales.
For December Pay
Gross Pay - Monthly salary of £2,750 and my bonus worked out around £1150.
This was then deducted in tax etc.
Jan Payslip
Gross Pay - Monthly salary of £2,750 (Gross Pay)
Deductions - Tax etc was taken off. Also the £1150 has been deducted. This was not deducted from my Gross Pay.
It is titled 'Advance' and matches the Bonus amount exactly from Dec Pay.
I have been with the company now for 4months. I didn't start earning till around December time, so I'm guessing this is my bonus / commission. The figure matches closely to what I should be given in commission.
I haven't spoken with the company yet, as I would like to have some knowledge before I start asking questions. I'm not even sure how long I will stay with this company, but that is something else.
I was on probation with the company for 3 months and they decided to extend this for another 3months.
I can see nothing in my contract stating that probation would affect my bonus entitlement. Having the bonus is one of the reasons for accepting this position in first place.
Thanks.

Check the staff handbook, if your probation as extended it's assumed that you weren't doing very well?Hi All,

I understand what you are saying. I've looked through the staff handbook and found nothing. Even in my contract it doesn't state anything.
I was never allowed into the position until week 7. That was end of training.
Then I had another training week on week 9. So you could say week 10 before I started.
I know myself I'm doing a good job. I'm pretty much top of the leaderboard for this year already.
People have left frequently in a short space of time in this position0 -
Ask the company for an explanation and post back here with the results.
Does sound like a shambles, but if it was a genuine mistake then they are allowed to correct it. They should have notified you in advance thoughChanging the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0 -
My guess would be that the bonus was paid in error. If you didn't start 'earning' until December I wouldn't expect the first bonus to be paid until January. You need to speak to your payroll people or HR to get a definitive answer.
Alternatively, given that it's marked as 'Advance' maybe they part of the January pay in December and effectively claw it back in the January pay packet.0 -
I'll email them for an explanation tomorrow.
I will have been taxed extra in December aswell.0 -
Do challenge it if they paid what you thought was the bonus and deducted tax and NI (and pension contributions) from it in December but clawed it back from your taxed income in January.
If the £1,150 payment was an error then it should be deducted from the gross pay in January, not from the nett pay.0
