Hi,
has anyone had any experience with insurers when it comes to medical issues?
I have mild narcolepsy(ie I don't just fall over, it takes a while for me to fall asleep) and my licence is restricted to a length of 3 years(ie I have to renew it every 3 years). Some insurers ask if you have any medical issues that stop you from driving or holding a license, these I am quite able to answer No to as the DVLA has deemed me safe to drive. However other insurers ask if I have declared any illness or have a restricted license, these insurers I have understandibly not given my infomation to as I am paranoid that not only will my quote be very high but due to their sharing of infomation with other insurers to stop fraud that it might mean my name will automatically incur a much higher rate.
Am I being paranoid or am I being correct in being selective of which insurers I choose to give my infomation to?

I'm a little surprised if certain insurers are not interested in this information about your medical condition. While it may not necessarily preclude cover, it is the sort of relevant information that underwriters will need to adequately consider the risk.
There is often some catch-all question asking whether there is anything else relevant ("material facts")that you should disclose to the underwriter. This applies both at the commencement of the insurance and at each subsequent renewal.
You might be in danger of forfeiting your cover (for non-disclosure) by not telling them about your narcolepsy. You may have a shock if you are unfortunate enough to have an accident and your condition is deemed to be relevant. Worst case scenario - your insurance is cancelled ab initio (i.e. from the inception of the policy) and your claim is not covered.
You're better off playing it safe and notifying each insurer of your condition. If it's not a box to be ticked by the persons asking the questions, they may not take any action at all. At least then your disclosure of the condition will have been recorded (either by telephone or on the proposal form, if any companies are still using such things!).
I would have thought that insurers will be more interested in your clean and accident-free driving record and the fact that DVLA have given you clearance to drive.
As for sharing of information, yes information is shared between insurers. I'm not sure that this is the sort of information that would be shared, particularly when looking at whether to take on a new risk. There are all sorts of hurdles to jump over in sharing information due to the Data Protection Act, etc.
Interested to hear other views on the subject.0 -
My mum has breast cancer in November 2003, she had a mastectomy, chemo and radiotherapy. Shes since been given a few all clears, shes not to see the oncologist for a year, coz shes doing so well, shes having a hell of a time trying to get insurance to go to Majorca for a week, she got it off of M&S before but they seemed to have changed their criteria. ANY SUGGESTIONS ????????? As shes feeling really down now, I told her thats the way these folk operate.0

I don't know the name of the company, but my MIL has had cancer and was provided with a list of companies specialising in cancer patients from her clinic where she went for chemo. She got quite a reasonable quote. Perhaps if your mum asks her hospital contact they could provide similar - if not I could try and find out who MIL used. Otherwise, try Cancer Relief/Macmillan websites?0

you could try https://www.allcleartravel.co.uk for travel insurance for medical conditions, not always cheap, but they will cover virtually anything, and you can do it online.
Also you could try Medi Quote on 01243 534435. Good luck!if it's more than 10 stone, and that hairy, it's probably not a dog...it may be a wookie.0
