MSE News: 1.2m UK vehicles to be 'corrected' in Volkswagen emissions scandal

When the car reaches 3 yrs & has an emissions test, wouldn't that reveal all?
Diesel emissions tests are very simple, they don't test it against the original certification not even a co2 test to check it's meeting its ved band.
Also recent real world testing have shown very few cars actually have emissions within the limit, nine out of ten cars fail to meet eu6 limit with some going hugely over. This issue has been highlighted a few times recently before the vw scandal but little action has been taken but now the issue has a lot more prominence it seems likely it will take a higher priority.

No. Diesels in the UK simply have to pass a smoke density test.
It's much more crude and basic than the checks they would have went when determining their emissions prior to being sold on the road. All your base are belong to us.0 -
Yes, repeatedly in pretty much every vw thread about this. On this thread alone there's someone claiming vw should have to do a safety recall due to app the deaths they're causing due to their emissions as if they're much worse than rivals.0

Of course it is a competition between car makers, for customers, to be seen to have the 'greenest' credentials and to meet all the legislative hoops imposed by governments while still being able to sell vehicles at a competitive price.0 -

What is going on?
George Osborn should be jumping with glee.
£10 billion fine on Volkswagen.
Higher VED on diesel cars until they have been neutered.
And then fine the owners if they re-chip the ECU.
Lower the national debt, pay for the NHS, courtesy of the Germans.
What is he waiting for?0 -
Why should anyone be surprised, everyone works to the limits set by legislation - school teachers teach their kids to pass SATs Tests, driving instructors teach you to pass the driving test, VW build a car to pass the EU emissions tests. There is a constant war between legislators and the public who suffer from over bearing rules (and don't get started on Health & Safety Legislation !).
VW owners bought their cars for low VED & great fuel economy - my Golf gets 70 mpg without effort, KEEP THE NEW POLITICIANS OFF MY CAR !.0
