An enterprising spark in the U.S. has found out how to unlock a PAP2 VoIP adapter sold locked to the Vonage VoIP network:
http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/remark,14450684
These adapters are available from Comet and BroadbandBuyer for £19.99:
http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/68_270202.html
http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=2286&CategoryID=320&ShopGroupID=77
These adapters have sockets to allow two normal telephones to be connected to use VoIP providers.
Please note that the unlocking process is not straightforward and requires a strong knowledge of networking, TFTP etc.
I haven't tried this yet - I am heading off to Comet later this afternoon....
Thanks
Gavin

Well I got one, followed the instructions and I have a phone connected to Sipgate using it....
A few notes if you decide to do this:
1. The filenames in the instructions are wrong - make a note of the BIN file names (within the ZIP files) and amend the URLs given accordingly (i.e. no hyphens).
2. If you use the SolarWinds TFTP server linked to in the thread, change the Security settings to allow "Transmit files" rather than the default of "Receive only".
3. Ensure that the DNS servers are defined in the PAP2 setup or else the ATA won't be able to find Sipgate (or your VoIP provider)...they are missing from Sipgate's instructions (for Sipura ATAs which are very similar).
4. Set the "FXS Port Impedence" to "270+750|150nF" which is the CTR21 standard for the UK and (most of) Europe.
5. Set CallerID method to "ETSI FSK with PR(UK)".
Thanks

Great Stuff.
I was reading about the PAP2 the other day, looked good but the £40 price put me off. At £20 it's much better, and that's the retail price - I'm sure I can reduce that a little more with a bit of searching
Only problem I have is that I'm usually downloading 24/7 which means that VOIP calls tend to break up/lag. I don't want to stop my downloads every time I use VOIP, so I need to get a new router that supports QoS so that I can prioritise VOIP traffic over everything else.0 -
Out of stock at BBB, and can't find them on the Maplin website, and no comet near me
I would love to get one to try it out.
Cheers, Des.0 -
They appear to be in stock on the Comet website - free delivery too.0

Aye, but they won't deliver to me0
-
Oh right, I'll let you know if I find any other vendors - haven't really looked yet0
-
I might take a trip to my nearest Maplins and see if they have any stock in store.
Has anyone got one from Maplin?
Cheers, Des.0 -
Took the trip to Maplins and no luck, they have never stocked them, and they are not in the new catalogue just out.
So it seems the only place I can get them is from Comet who won't ship to me
If anyone knows of anywhere else selling them, please let me know
Cheers, Des0 -
If you buy one of these, please ensure that you run the unlock process straightaway with your Internet connection disabled.
It seems that the PAP2 will try to automatically download new firmware from Vonage when it is powered up which will make the unlocking process more difficult if not impossible...
Thanks

Gavin - once unlocked will the PAP2 still attempt to download firmware from Vonage at some point? Like on power-up for example?
cheers
DesG - whereabouts are you located?0
