IKEA sale. 21% off one day sale RUMOURED

URGENT UPDATE! THE SALE IS NOW CONFIRMED - SEE UPDATE BELOW

What’s the deal?

There are strong rumours that this Saturday 19 April, Ikea will have a one day 21% off everything sale to celebrate its 21st birthday. Ikea sales are very rare and a store-wide one would be exceptional. Thus, if it's true, it’s the perfect time to stock up on the usual suspects from the ubiquitous Swedish furnisher.

Why am I telling you if it's only a rumour?

We’ve tried to speak to the press office and powers-that-be at Ikea, but it's remaining tight-lipped; possibly as it wants a big press launch later this week. However as this would be a unique sale only lasting a day; I thought it was important to give MoneySavers a heads-up, in case it does.

Is it worth turning up there on Saturday?

By Friday, it's very likely we’ll know if it's happening, so keep checking this space, as it’ll be updated with any info. Don’t set out on an unnecessary journey without calling the store or letting us know. Check Ikea's store list to get its number.
IKEA HAS ISSUED A PRESS RELEASE CONFIRMING THE SALE (7.30pm WEDNESDAY 16 APRIL) IT'S AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS:

How strong is the rumour?

Very. As you’ll see from the discussion below, this is primarily coming from Ikea staff. You can also see similar info in the Ikea staff group on Facebook. (Worth noting also Ikea did 15% off in the US, for its 20th anniversary there - so there is a precedent)

I've added this note on top of the discussion below, thanks to all MoneySavers who provided the tip-off (hopefully it's a good 'un)

Make the experience as smooth as possible

If the sale does take place and you're planning to go, there are a few tips worth considering to make your trip as pleasant as possible.
  • Plan ahead. Have a look at the catalogue online and get an idea of what you want. If you know for sure then note the names and sizes down in advance and use the product locators in store to track them down quickly.
  • Leave children and pets at home or with friends or family.
  • Take a bottle of water and nibbles. If stores are as busy as expected while you'll be able to buy food and drink the queues could be long so keep hydrated!
  • Get the family card. According to some rumours stores will be open from 6am to midnight on the day plus one person has suggested only those who have Ikea's "Family" loyalty card will be allowed in between 6-8am.
The Family card is free to get and gives you discounts off some items, money-off vouchers such as £10 off a £70 spend through the post and, in some stores, free tea or coffee in the restaurant in the week. While you can get it online if you want it for Saturday you'll need to grab one in store beforehand. The application forms with the cards stuck to them are available in stores, usually around the specific Ikea Family section. Just take off and keep the plastic card, fill in the application form and pop that in the special box provided. You'll be able to use the card straight away by just handing it to the cashier to swipe when you make a purchase.
  • Treat staff and customers the way you'd wish to be treated. It goes without saying most Ikea staff will have been working for several hours already by the time you get there plus other customers, like you, may have been queuing for some time so be pleasant to everyone, even in the face of adversity. It'll make the experience a whole lot easier for everyone!

THE IKEA PRESS RELEASE... IT DOESNT EXPLICITLY SAY 21% OFF EVERYTHING... BUT INDICATES IT. I WILL UPDATE WITH EXACT INFO THUR.
IKEA OFFERS 21% DISCOUNT TO CELEBRATE 21st BIRTHDAY IN UK

This week marks the coming of age of IKEA in the UK and the start of some landmark activities never before done by IKEA to celebrate with customers and co-workers. Festivities start on Thursday 17th April with the launch of ‘UK AT HOME’ – a unique new coffee table book, and continue with IKEA offering all customers a 21% discount on Saturday April 19th.

UK AT HOME is the result of an extraordinary creative collaboration between professional photographers, journalists, noted writers, information researchers and tens of thousands of amateur photographers who teamed up to document home life across the UK over the course of a single seven day period in September 2007. The resulting book captures “the emotions of home,” the distinctive rituals, the intimate moments, and all the myriad ways in which we work, play, learn and conduct our lives.

Featuring a foreword by Sir Paul McCartney and essays from literary heavyweights such as Alexander McCall Smith and Will Self, the project reinforces the IKEA viewpoint that “Home is the Most Important Place in the World”.

Then on Saturday April 19th, for one day only, IKEA UK is hosting its largest ever celebration for customers by opening the doors from 6am until midnight and offering a unique 21% discount in all UK stores. A party atmosphere is planned with free breakfast served to IKEA Family members between 6 – 8am, the iconic IKEA hotdog on offer for 21p, and many fun activities for all.
Co-worker celebrations centre around the opportunity to say thank you to everyone for their contribution over the last 21years.

- Each co-worker will receive their own personal copy of the “UK AT HOME” book

- In addition all co-workers are invited to one big IKEA party on Sunday May 11th. Taking place
on the same night in all stores and linked up with IKEA’s very own live radio station and live webcam, it will be a party not to be missed!

- Finally, following the 21% discount day for customers, co-workers will have their own discount days in May.

Peter Hŏgsted, Country Manager of IKEA UK said: “IKEA has an ambition of creating a better everyday life for ‘the many people’. Therefore, to mark our coming of age in the UK, we plan to celebrate with the many people!

“Our customers sit at the heart of where we are today. IKEA is very much built on a partnership with the customer – IKEA does its half, and the customers do theirs, from choosing the furniture, to transporting it home flat packed and assembling it themselves. Together we save money which is important for continually being able to offer low prices. Of course, we have a long way to go to reach our ambition but we will continually strive to improve our offering day to day and look forward to another 21 years in the UK!”

Since first opening its doors in the UK, in Warrington, in 1987:

• IKEA UK customers have scoffed over four billion meatballs and 48 million hotdogs.

• The IKEA catalogue has become one of the most read publications in the world with more than 191 million copies printed in 27 languages

• Over 110,000 people visit a store in the UK every day

• 450 million people visit www.ikea.com every year

• Over 61 million BUMERANG clothes hangers have been sold – that’s enough for one hanger for every man, woman and child in the country!

• IKEA now has 17 stores and 9,500 co-workers in the UK

• IKEA was the first major retailer to completely remove plastic bags from its stores; they first started charging 10p for biodegradable plastic bags in 1996, which created a 95% reduction in use

• IKEA – a potted history

IKEA’s remarkable retail story has a humble beginning, more than 60 years ago, in a rickety garden shed in Sweden with a young entrepreneurial man named Ingvar Kamprad. He began distributing local wares via the local milk van and at 17 registered the name IKEA, after the initials of his name, the farm where he grew up, Elmtaryd, and his home village, Agunnaryd. Five years later, his small items such as pens, Christmas cards and sweets were joined by a newly designed armchair bearing the name RUT, sparking the first stage of what would become a revolution in home furnishings and the emergence of the IKEA we know today

Any news on online sales yet? I want a sofa (and need the delivery and my post code is covered), but I'll be in California on the 21st - I assume it is a one day sale...
