Default £12 Young Persons Railcard (50% off)

What's the deal?

Until 16 March, National Rail is offering Young Persons Railcard's for half price at just £12. These cut a third off your travel bill so, if you're between 16 and 25 and spend over £36 a year on trains (even if it's just one trip), get one. While mature students over 26 in full time education are eligible to get a Young Person's Railcard sadly they can't apply online as they need to show evidence that they're studying.

How to grab one

Use this special railcard link and enter the code SAVING12 when registering. You'll need to upload a passport style photo of yourself, plus you'll need your passport or UK driving licence handy.

The link is a tracking one as we asked National Railcard for permission to give out the offer code; it was fine, but wanted to see how many MoneySavers do it. However there is no commercial link between MoneySavingExpert.com and National Railcard.

What you get

As well as a third off most rail fares, including on the Oyster Pay as you Go capped rate if you're in London (read more on the Transport for London site), there's also currently free Youth Hostel Association membership and discounts on eating out. See the full list of offers available on the Railcard Website.

Are there any catches to the railcard?

The railcard can be used at any time although if you travel before 10am in the week you'll have to pay a minimum fare (this applies all year except in July and August).

Yet very occassionally some special fares (e.g. cheap london to manchester) undercut it so check, but for regular train travel it's great.

For more train fare cost-cutting tips, read the full Cheap Train Tickets article

Talking 50% off Young person's railcard

Oops, this should go in dthe discounts section - could someone move it please?

A Young Persons Railcard gives you 1/3 off rail travel for a whole year, plus a host of other offers including discounts at attractions, accommodation, restaurants and cinema. Until 16 March 2008, you can get one online for just £12 instead of the usual £24. Use the code SAVING12.

Just a note, most places wont let you use it before 10am, dont know if this is just the free one I got for taking a student bank account but its a young persons railcard all the same.

And lol if Id known it was £24 to buy I wouldve took the £100 they offered instead, stating the railcard was valued at more than that, or is the £24 just one years card as opposed to 5?

Hiya yes the free railcard with the bank is 5 years and this one is for 12 months so your deal was good! This one is too.

Grr! Need to renew mine soon and no way to upload picture! When I get to the ticket office i'm going to point out the unfairness and try and get it 1/2 price or even 1/3 would be great!

It's no good moaning about poor service, and then doing nothing about it!

Just found the answer and it will expire in 1yr, as long as I apply for before birthday!

I just tried it out and it will let you proceed and pay without uploading a photo.

Just before you are required to pay it states the following warning "Please note that if a suitable photo has not been downloaded during this application then your Railcard will only be dispatched to you once a photo has been sent to and processed by Railcards-Online. Railcards are dispatched within three working days of photos being received by Railcards-Online".

I am going to wait a few more days until I apply as I dont need to use it anytime soon.

Hi, I was juz wondering if the free YHA membership is only applicable for people who apply for the card NOW? I ordered a card online a few months ago, so it's still valid. Was wondering if there's anyway for me to get the membership through a link or something

just to clarify, although people over 25 in full time education ARE eligible for the young person's railcard, we cannot get them online, and thus cannot make use of this offer. which is a bit of a pain as i need to get a new one...
