Treatment at Tesco (split from the Tesco misprices thread in Grabbit)

Options
we are currently in a major dispute with tesco over this. we bought 4 of the corps tanks which all had the lower price stickers on and were overcharged at till. went to customer services for refund & replace (big ' if things don't add up poster' displayed), only to be verbally and physically assaulted. customer service girl explained she would have to get the duty manager due to the amount. all we had said was that we had been overcharged. duty manager arrives and is extremely rude demands " where did you find these", we said obviously in the toy department. he storms off, and returns again extremely rude, pushes past us to whisper to customer services girl. he eventually acknowloges us by saying "this is not a tesco error, these are not tesco stickers, they have been stuck on by customers!" therefore implying us! we told him he was wrong as these products often arrive instore with price stickers on. he eventually said he would give difference. i then pointed to 'if things don't add up poster' he said he did not have to follow it as it was not tescos mistake!. he then said " you two are seriously !!!!!! me off" - i was shocked, i then said loudly i couldn't believe he had just sworn at us, he denied it i then repeated what he said and he shook his head.

he then pushed between us to get to the products which now belonged to us and started to rip the price stickers off, when my fiance realised what he was doing he placed his had over the last sticker to stop the manager removing it. i asked him to return the stickers as this was our proof of the overcharge, he refused. he then proceeded to try to wrestle the last remaining box out of my fiances hand. he was trying to steal the last sticker by bending my fiances fingers back. my fiance said loudly"why are you trying to break my fingers" which seemed to bring the manager back to his senses and he removed his grasp only for my fiances hand to be left bleeding and bruised. the manager then denied he had dug his nail into my finaces hand. we asked that it be put in accident book, which customer services girl started to get out, only to be shouted at to not put it in by so called manager. by this time he had called the security guard over who was looking beamused by whole situation and the manager was repeating "leave the store" we explained it was against the law for him to not fill out and accident report, which he ignored. he then said if we didn't leave he would call the police, to which we replied good we will have you done for assault. head office was closed so we couldn't involve them and he said he was the highest manager there.

we ended up leaving upset, bleeding, bruised and embarrassed and angry.

both of us have worked in retail and have never seen such bad customer service. we got everyones names involved and then went to nearby store. who have provided a witness to the state of my finaces hand after the incident. we sent letters/ photos etc to store manager and head office. we received a letter from a customer service executive that it was being taken very seriously and they are very sorry for the way their staff member behaved. we are assured he will be severely reprimanded but they cannot go into their internal procedures. the store manager will be intouch after the investigations are complete. so we await the outcome. the best bit is the so called manager had a first aiders badge on!

Chardonnay - what an awful situation for you to have to go through, I am honestly shocked and that doesn't happen easily!!

I think you would have been more than justified in filing a complaint with the police as your fiance sustained physical injuries. If this guy doesn't get summararily dismissed then Tesco will be saying it's ok to attack customers by default! Were there any neutral witnesses? Demand to see any CCTV footage, and for it to be kept (I would imagine there conveniently won't be any).

While I think it's probably irrelevant, as this man's actions were unreasonable whether the toys were mispriced or not, I would be more than happy to provide confirmation that the toys did have the stickers on in more than one other store (two that I know of in my area).

Sorry you had to go through this

This is outrageous behavoiur!!I cant believe it !!( but i do) I would be tempted to report it to the police anyway lets face it if you went into store and asaulted one of tescos staff you would be reported to the police, at least that way if tescos dont sack him then at least he will be given a warning etc by the police.....I would also be tempted to send tescos a letter stating that you are seeking legal advice for the physical/ emotional trauma caused ...that should get them moving...good luck

Chardonnay- i am disgusted at this behaviour, i don't know what more to say.
I would like to know which town this tesco's was in, i'm not sure if its in the forum rules to name and shame but i have noticed that when people find a good bargain they are allowed to post oxford tesco still have ****** left so i don't see that giving out a stores location for BAD service would not be allowed.

i'm still completely gobsmack, just cant beleive it (just to clarify I DO beleive you, but i cannot believe the behaviour of the manager)

I sympathise with you on this dreadful situation, Chardonnay, and agree with what others have said.

However, this is getting way off topic now so please can we return to the topic of the bargains, guys. Thanks :)

    Well Well Well!

Chardonay you should contact Tesco head office immediately and demand they secure ANY footage of you whilst you were in the store, the Data protection act provides for this and they are legally obliged to do so, you should also seek legal advice and make a complaint to the police to ensure the incident is documented, expect Tesco to adopt a defensive attitude with this situation and attempt damage limitation by way of shifting some of the blame onto yourselves this manager will certainly give a differing account of the events to yourself.

This is something you really need to seek advice on from a professional if nothing else to demonstrate to Tesco that they need to deal with this matter carefully and responsibly.

Never mind head office for the moment - I'd have called the police. The second you'd touched one of their staff they'd have do so!

thanks for all the advice we are still going to lodge a complaint with police next time we go through. the store is tesco extra cumbernauld. we don't live near the store anymore but drop in usually when visiting relatives. good point about securing the cctv footage re head office, will get fiance to phone them. our letters have stated we are considering legal action. i still can't believe what happened and i was there! it was surreal.

sorry for making the thread go off topic. just wanted to let people know about our over zealous manager. we have told tesco we are so traumatised, we may never set foot in one of their stores again.

Make a call to your local paper or radio station.... I'm sure that they would love to have a nice story on Tesco staff assaulting customers.

Local papers are always on the lookout for stories like this, especially if if there was resentment (among local traders) when the store originally opened.

Thats assuming that Tesco don't advertise with them though.

as this thread is continuing off topic, I'm going to split it out from Chardonnay's post about the treatment received from Tesco and the move the split thread to the Vent board. I've PMd Chardonnay to let her know :)

My goodness, this is the most shocking story I've heard in a long time! And I thought my little argument with the Tesco Customer Service girl over the tanks was bad, whew!

I don't really have any advice, I think previous posters have got everything covered. Just wanted to say, as Addy mentioned before, I can also prove that the toys came with stickers on the packaging and I've actually still got an unopened one. I'm sure Tesco won't need proof of this, though, as surely they have some record of their promotions/prices somewhere.

It's just unbelieveable, isn't it... Good luck with your complaint!!!
