Ebay in widescreen

I've just bought a new PC with a widescreen monitor. When I look at photos on Ebay, they're distorted...everything looks fat...why? My resolution is set to 1280 x 1024

The resolution is set wrong, 1280x1024 is not a widescreen resolution (it is standard 4:3 aspect ratio) so it is stretched to fill your widescreen monitor. Look in your monitor's manual for the native resolution of the screen (it may be something like 1920 x 1080 for example) and set it to that for the best (and undistorted) picture quality.0

My widescreen 19" is set at 1440x900. Have a look in display properties and change it there.0

Thats the highest the slider goes up to. The next one down is 1152x864. Is it a graphics card setting I need to change?0

you need to use the disk that came with the monitor to install the monitor profile so the PC knows what the monitor is capable of.0

Oh...I'll check...thanks0

If that doesn't work, try in this order:
- Installing the monitor drivers (if the monitor came with a disk).
- Updating your graphics card's drivers to the latest version.
- PowerStrip (free trial) to see if it helps. Only adjust the settings you need. Though it's not free (£15-16), it's cheaper than buying a new graphics card.
- As a last resort, you'll need to buy a graphics card. But before you do that tell us what make & model your present one is.
Btw, Poppycat's right about the 1440x900 res - mine is set the same. G0 -
I've updated from the disk and the highest potion is still 1152 x 864. The graphics card is a geForce 7800 so I'm sure it should work. It is a pretty good spec PC.....0

The recommendsd res is 1440 x 990 but I don't get that option.0

I've just turned the monitor off and then back on and it's gone up to 1280 x 1024....I'm getting there!0

Can you give some more details please, like:
- Your OS?
- nVidia driver version?
E.g., this person is having a similar problem with Vista & v96.85, but an earlier driver version worked:
"A rollback to Windows WDM driver, then install of 96.85, succeeded. Yet 1440X900 resolution is not available here with that driver, as it is with 96.33."
Likewise, you may have to try older driver versions to get it to work -nVidia driver archive.
Good luck, G0
