All,
I recently bought a new car. I went to the garage and the sales person said I had £8000 to pay which i duly did and I was given a reciept for the payment which stated reason for reciept "balance" and then signed by the sales person.
However on getting home I checked my online balance and £10,000 was taken and an answerphone message left on my phone which stated that I had "to call" them. This additional £2,000 payment was then taken from my account without my authorisation!.
What are my rights here. If the sales person has undercharged me in their eyes can they then take more money from my account without my authorisation.
Also do I have to pay the £2,000 pound anyway even though the signed reciept states reaon for reciept "balance".
Please help!

How was payment made? If you did is on their premisis with Chip and PIN then you have no comebacks. However, if they did the full payment over the phone using your card details then it's a bit naughty of them.
Also, is the paperwork an Order Form or Sales Invoice?0 -

well the first payment was made by chip and pin and the second was after we left and must have been by manually putting in my card details half an hour later.
I have a reciept which states the amount I paid and the reason being "balance".
I have two of these one for the intial deposit and once for the balance.0 -
So what was the amount YOU autherised with the Chip and PIN?
There is no way they will be able to process another payment for a different amount unless they have your card details - as Chip and PIN machines dont store this info. It's just **** **** **** 1234.
If you autherized 10,000 when you entered your PIN then you have very little comeback, sadly.0 -
£8,000 was authorised by chip and pin.
The £2,000 extra taken half an hour later was not authorised by chip and pin.
Does the merchant reciept hold my card details?
I know my copy does not.0 -
No i authorised £8000 which was what we agreed to pay there and then.
I have the reciept showing this.0 -
Well there is no way they could have taken an extra 2000 quid. Unless they have your card details -which the machine doesn't keep.0

Have you called the garage in question and asked for a explanation?
It is possible for them to take payment manually but only if they have your card details. I think the receipt only records the last 4 digits so how did they get the rest?
Edit: Great minds think alike0 -
Just re-reading you post, where you supposed to pay £10,000 but only paid £8000 cos the salesman made a mistake which you noticed but kept your mouth shut?
If they have a signed order form or invoice which states the proper figures no you can't pull a fast one, you owe what you owe. The receipt with balance mistakenly written on matters not.
You can demand the money back that they have taken without authorisation and refuse to pay anymore. However i think you'd find yourself in court very fast and you'd lose.0
