Default Telogram

Hi,

Not sure if this is the right place to post about his...

OH just got a letter from TELOGRAM saying that they are holding a message for him and to contact them (01252 number). He has dodgy debt past (before me) and I wonder... Anyone had anything similar?

Will go try and search on google.

From what I know, this is a ruse to try and get you to confirm your identity and/or address so you can be pursued for a debt.

I wouldn't contact them and just bin the letter, if they ever come back to you just say you didn't receive the letter. It sounds as if they might have a very old debt which might be close to 6 years. Which if it was they might need you to admit to the debt first before they can pursue you.

Another website said that this seems to be a set of solicitors who specialise in debt collection. When you call them it confirms that they have the correct details and then they send in the debt collectors.

I'd ignore it if I were you.

Sounds very like debt collection to me, and very similar indeed to a letter I recieved from Npower.

Personally, Id just face up to it, give them a ring. I was a bit scared when I got it, but I called up and it was Npower saying I owed them 40 quid. Id already sent the cheque so It was better to know what it was than batten down the hatches. It'll come for you one day, better to face the music IMHO.

I would like to deal with it, but it is OH's debt and therefore his right to decide, however, like you have said Lone Ranger, if they have something to say, just say it.

I am scared that if we do make contact, then they all will. I have no idea how much is owed as it was all from quite a while before we got together.

I had one like this once, many years agao. I phoned from a call box as we were too poor for phone etc back then & it was a debt sold by videotron they were chasing about. We didnt actually owe the money but videotron were notorious for never getting their sums right. Ignor & save the cost of a phone call.

I think scared of finding out about more debt that you have that you cant get out of. I feel facing up to these letters ( and some of them are incorrect, lets face it, how many threads are there.. "DCA chasing a debt thats not mine") can often reduce stress and not add to it. I like to shine light in dark places where I can though

Telogram Ltd is a scam company run by Capquest Debt Recovery. Very fond of trying to make people pay debts that aren't theirs.

If in doubt, challenge them.

Hi,

Thats interesting to know!

We receive a lot of debt collector letters for a previous owner at our address, (she has outstanding debt for a least Sky & a Car), today we received two letters, the Telogram letter, saying a message was waiting and would expire on the 16th october, which i just sent back with 'NOT AT THIS ADDRESS' writen all over. I had thought about phoning the number, glad I didn't now, don't want them to think she still lives there. Plus I don't see why I should waste my phone bill calling them to expain she doesn't live here any more.

We also received a letter for the Sky debt, we've had 2 or 3 before, last one about a week or 2 ago, which again I sent back with 'NOT AT THIS ADDRESS MOVED TO SCOTLAND IN 03' writen all over. But the letter started 'Due to no resolution from our previous contact attempts' and at the bottom it said 'Ignoring this letter will only make things worse, contact us before we have to send a collector' or something to that wording. Should I phone and explain, or send it back again?

I'm interested in how they would get other people to pay debts that aren't theirs? No way will they get me to pay hers.

I keep worrying that a collector will turn up on our door step and demand payment, even though she moved out 3 years ago. Anyone have any suggestions if they do? I don't want them trying to break into our house, or car!

Cheers

bjblackmore

If they do, you need to show them (photo) id to prove you're not the person they want, and also proof of when you moved into the house (tenacy agreement etc). This should be enough to get them off your case.

I hope so, but I watched that BBC program a couple of weeks back, 'Whistleblower' I think it's called, and the debt collectors were doing some dodgy stuff, like going to a house where the bloke no longer lived, and tried to get money out the current owners, or breaking and entering etc
I don't want them towing/clamping one of our cars, while were not at home!

One interesting thing I noticed, is the Sky debt letter says 'Original debt property' or something, and it's not our current address. So they must have found out she lived at our address somehow. I know when we moved in she wasn't with Sky, but had NTL.

One other thing, we DO have Sky installed (no outstanding debt), so you'd think they would be able to match up the address, and see she doesn't live here any longer! I hope the debt collector doesn't try to nick our dish (or clamp it ) while we're out!

You are under absolutely no obligation to show anything to these people. Neither do they have right of entry into your house. The debt is not yours and if there is any onus of proof it should be with these people who are harrassing you, to prove otherwise.
Have a look on the insolvency website - they have a section about debt collectors/bailiffs - this is not the exact link, but it will take you there:
Also have a look on the OFT website to see the guidelines on how DCA's should behave.

I wouldn't worry too much, there will be a letter from a court addressed to her first. When that one is sent back the court will ask the parties trying to collect the debt to show recent proof of address. Which will automatically show that they are not living in that house and the case will be thrown out!

This is possibly a better link, as my original link is more specifically about bailiffs (same meat - different gravy):

Thanks for the link rog2, it makes an interesting read, especially this section:

Quote:
a creditor will be committing an offence if...the creditor pretends to be someone they are not
How does that fair with this whole 'TELOGRAM' scam? Surely they are pretending to be something they are not?
