Spain- Car Hire prices Gone Crazy

Hi Everyone,

sorry to bring you this bad news and hope it does not spoil anyones pre-booked holiday to Spain who have not booked car hire yet.

I am afraid that at Malaga airport the car hire prices have trebled in some cases due to the credit crunch. The companies are informing clients that due to the fact they are not able to raise finance to renew cars, the cars they have left which are road worthy are in short supply. This in turn is causing prices to increase!!

They state that you need to book early for best prices so if you have any trips booked well in advance, get those cars booked if you can at the best price available. They state they will honour existing bookings.

An example for you is a car we booked next week for 11 days has increased from 141 euros to 280, whilst a car we have booked in the summer for 21 days has increased from 375 euros to 966!!!!! HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another crazy example of the credit crunch biting- what happened to lower prices!!!! This changes the whole complex of holiday car hire so I think I will have to buy one instead!!!

There may be light at the end of the tunnel regarding one company which I will update if we receive further details.

This is good. We managed to get a 207 too. £176 for 9 days from economy car hire UK, they are good for the zero deposit excess waivers etc. Think we'll be seeing alot more threads like this over the next few months!

Yes I have noticed this massive hike in prices as well. Some very big companies like Carjet had no cars available at all for this school holiday weekend.
    Very unusual !!!!!!
I agree with the OP.....its soon going to be cheaper to buy a car than hire one for 3 weeks

I have known Carjet and Holiday Autos to not have cars available at peak times, it is not that unusual.

Carjet dont actually own any cars, they are a broker that deal with actual car hire companies and as such if the hire company have cut back the number of cars, then Carjet will have less cars available too.

When they couldn't help me with a last minute booking, their advice was to try the "big boys" Hertz, Avis etc. I did and actually found them to be cheaper than Carjet, although the excesses were horrendous, 600 euros+.

Worth shopping around ALL companies and book as early as you can.

The problem is you can not buy/own a car in Spain until you have a ID number issued by the government which are for residents.

Any person can obtain a N!mero de Identificaci!n Fiscal (NIF) regardless of nationality but until you have one you will not be alowed to purchase a car.
I have a apartment in Murcia and my brother although not a resident obtained one by using my apartment address and a passport which allowed him to open a bank account in Spain also.

  • You do not need to be a Spanish resident to purchase a vehicle in Spain.

As posted you simply need to apply for an NIE number which is your National Security number, the same as in the UK and you can purchase a vehicle.

This also allows you to open a bank account and purchase a property and anything else which requires a transfer through any notary.

To purchase a vehicle on finance requires you to be a Spanish resident, especially new vehicles.
  • HI try these - www.malagacar.com we booked sat to sat 6th to 13th June - £90 and will pay cash in sterling.
    Sorry if too late.
  • My family and I have had an apartment in Spain for several years now, and I have nearly always hired our car through DoYouSpain.com. They have usually given the best prices and a good choice of car.

As a family though, we are planning on driving to to Murcia next year for 2 weeks as it will work out cheaper then 4 return flights, car park and car hire!!!! The ferry Dover to Calais is approx £90, and the petrol all the way down will still be cheaper then parking in the UK and getting a hire car.

By the way, I'm glad I booked this summers car in February!!

I have found that and English agency in Esher to be excellent and reliable. £133 for a week in high season for a Peugeot 308 at Malaga, Gibraltar, Seville, Alemeria and Granada (£104 in low season) They also have one of the simplest methods of booking: no credit card information required; just pay on arrival in UK money. They act as brokers to Niza and Marinsa, two big companies at Malaga Airport (actually about 250 yards from the terminal - the minibus to collect you rarely gets up to third gear).
