I feel for those buying TV's....

Soooo many people are posting up TV deals its almost a given not to buy now. Alot of people think theyre getting some kind of a bargain right now on 30" tele's for £500 or under, truth is, by next february, those very tv's will be nigh on £300. Either that or they'll come packaged with extras like stands plus surround sound.

New tv technology is being introduced very very soon, which is why the prices of tv's are falling. Coupled with the fall in currency strength and economic climate etc you'll be seeing 50" sets regarded as high end now, go dirt cheap by mid feb.

Originally DSG are going into adminitration for zippy Strong Opinion DSG Group ARE going into administration, after the new year. It may lead to a few store closures (you can find a currys/comet a mile from where i am, then 4 miles from there per store lol!) Nothing drastic like wooly's or zavvi's. They will continue trading as normal.

They will cut down on buying existing stock, so for example, they will attempt to get rid of all the stock tv's they have, wont be buying any more low end existing sets as they wont be much use very soon. They have ALOT of electricals which wont be return to manufacturer (RTM) hence the cut price tele's.

A healthy note for fellow MS'ers

EDIT**

LOL! Its not negativity..is it?

Nope. No scaremongering.

Yes, Administration.

Also, if youre tech savvy, youre likely to know that the technology market is advancing so quickly that something bought today, same time next year will be a third of the cost. Its the reality of the situation. But you cant keep holding off when you really need something lol. That situation started hmm i'd say about 2004.

Prices wont rise. Some people are claiming that because the pound is getting weaker companies are going to put the price up. Wrong. If anything, price rises will occur bottom end of 2009. Or, just follow America. When they're on the up, we're likely to follow suit. Rather bland analysis i know. Trying to keep it simple.

Two sides to this. Some analysts (like me) feel that companies who state that 'prices are definately going up beginning of 2009' say such things to boost december sales (happens every year)

Other analysts suggest that the prices truly will increase as most companies absorbed increased costs this year, limiting the increase to customers, to keep sales going as this probably was the worst year for many. So a hike is imminent. There is some truth in this, oil production is being cut, so prices aint gonna keep dropping. Steel might increase in price. So i guess its a matter of, buy now win some, or, buy now lose some.

In regards to new technology being expensive. Yes and No. In the tele world, 40" and below sized tv's are really crashing in price. You wont see a set bigger than 50" on the cheap. There is a good reason for this. Tech is always expensive, for about two months, then the prices start dropping like flies. With the introduction of 3D-TV very soon..(Surely you've heard SKY are recording certain shows in 3D, also the rapid introduction of 3D in cinema - Dark Knight, Iron Man 2, Transformers 2 etc) means pretty soon people are gonna want 3D TV sets. Also, as Blu-Ray is becoming the norm, prices for Blu-Ray players are going to drop, and 3D Content on blu-ray is imminent.

FreeSat has HD Content for free!? But dont get a box yet, wait 'till 2nd Quarter.

I use an old analogue tv! The only reason id get HD is for gaming or when varied content is freely available, but im a pc gamer so no need yet!

HD content will be widely available and free by mid next year.

Ok a little tech mumbo jumbo.

HD successor? Ultra HD. Yup, broadcast for UHD wont start soon, but UHD content will be available, at a price ofcourse.

Laser tv's are probably the next thing in line for tv's. Theyre about 5 grand at the moment, thats only because one manufacturer is making them, however once they all get on the bandwagon a 55" + set will be for just over a grand. (Predicted end of '09 for a price of that region) Theyre cheaper to make than plasma/lcd's, just as thin, consume less power than plasma/lcd's, standard sets produce better colours and all that malarky than the most high end plasma/lcd of current.

Also we're likely to get OLED displays sooner than they predict. I'll spare the details.

BabYBLooZ - I'll be honest, im not going to recommend anything. Many people are in the same predicament. I could be wrong..(highly unlikely)

Trace_567 - Substantiates what i am passing on. TV prices are not going to go up. They will fall further. Which is ultimately what this post is about.

    I thought I was negative ...

Can you actually substantiate anything that you are saying, or are you just scaremongering?
    Gone ... or have I?
  • How about feeling for those that bought tv's a year ago and more seeing how much more they could have got now for the money.

As for new tv technology, HD still is not avalible and used by the masses and won't be till it becomes avalible on freeview or comes free with virgin and sky.
Plus any NEW tv tecnology will come with a high price tag, just like HD LCD's did when first out.

Are they really? That really will change the retail landscape in this country.

With the currency problems we are having, prices are just as likely to go up, after the new year.

oooohh errrm, we were thinking of buying a new telly this week, a Panasonic with freesat, now I have read this I am thinking 'should we wait a bit?'
:hello:  please play nicely children !
  • DSG seems to be scaremongering topic of the week. I know I started the other thread but I am trying to get real thought out answers instead of "my uncle's plumber's cousin said that his niece who works at PC World says it's going down" :P

This is what I was thinking too - prices are more likely to go up!
  • Technology is always changing isn't it? Yes, if you wait long enough the prices will go down, but then they'll bring out the new technology which invariably will cost a lot more.

I'd say that if you want to buy a TV now, do it. But make sure you pay with your credit card in case of any more retailers folding. :)
  • If you're worried about DSG.. why not just buy a big TV from Tesco - they had some great deals on 32" tellys.

OLED isn't anywhere near affordable for larger TVs. You'll see the early adoptors buying them in 2 years - i really doubt 1 year. I think it will be at least 5 years until OLED is 'mainstream'. They're still trying to fix a few aspects of it and bring down production costs.

hmmm yeah like i said i wanna keep the terminology and descriptions simple. totally understand where you' re coming from though.

in terms of flexible oled, we may be a way off (again, never follow their predictions, they can milk money off existing products if predictions for newer ranges are as late as possible)

however oled is being used in mobiles already, like the nokia 8800, a couple of companies have already taken to AMOLED, with production of 17" and availability now, with 32" tv screen sizes of AMOLED probably by 3rd Q 2009 and mainstream 2010 with 40" plus. (samsung probably be the first distributors)

although im not saying hold out for them lol they'll be expenseeev.
its a good read though, up and coming tech.

Laser TVs won't be under 1k at the end of 2009, i can bet you on that. Freesat boxes were going for 55 quid on xmas eve, that was a bargain. If you NEED a tv, do your research and go for the one you feel best with.
