SKY+ HD Offer!! Don't upgrade yet!!!!

So most people will have seen the current offer from sky...

http://www.sky.com/portal/site/skycom/skyproducts/skytv/skyhd/pricing?DCMP=PAC_HDMagSep08

This is for new and existing customers. So if you wanted to take up this offer you might pay £75 for the box, £30 install total=£105. You then have to sign up to HD Mix which gives you the HD channels (£10 per month).

So I am an existing customer of Sky+. I pay £21 a month for 5 mixes and thats it. Im happy with that. So then i think about upgrading to HD. I phone up and Im offered the above deal plus £15 credit. So that will take my package to £31 a month (HD Mix £10). Im also interested in the full sky movies package which will take my package to a total of £47. I also ask if i can cancel movies at anytime which I will do if i don't feel i am getting the most out of it, this is no problem. I put the phone down and tell them I'll come back to them.

I then realise Im out of contract, so I called the cancellations department and tell them Im thinking of swapping to FreeSat so i can get a couple of free HD Channels.

And then..... The very helpful sky guy offers me...

A new Sky+ HD box and installation for £49 quid!!!!!! (Normally £105) I ummm and arrrggh a bit, and he then offers me the HD mix (£10 a month) for a deep sea diver (a fiver)!!!! For six months then it goes back to £10 a month thereafter. They don't offer this anywhere!!!

So had i just upgraded I would have paid £105 for the HD box and installation. £10 a month for HD Mix, £120 a year. And £37 per month, £444 annually for 5 Mixes and all movies. TOTAL £669.00

But by threatening to cancel i have paid for the year... £49 for the box and installation. £5 for HD Mix (£5 for 6 months £10 thereafter) £90. £444 for my TV package. TOTAL £583.00

So a total saving of £83.00. I have the new box coming 6 days later and it only cost £49 installed. Much better than their current deal of £105.

If you are interested in upgrading, don't! Enquire about canceling and see what they offer. It worked for me.

Good luck.

Sky brought to earth: Victory for viewers as satellite giant is told to cut charges to rivals

Sky has been ordered to reduce the cost of its sports and film packages for rivals by media regulator Ofcom.

The watchdog wants the satellite broadcaster to sell its premium output at more competitive rates, in a move that could spark a pay-TV price war.

It could also lead to blockbuster films and Premier League football matches being broadcast on a range of platforms, including digital terrestrial services such as Freeview.

  • About time Sky brought their prices down though isn't it.

Surely more people would subscribe to the films and sports if they weren't so expensive to add on. Then the more sign ups at the cheaper price would surely give them a better net profit.

Dont get too carried away, nothing will happen overnight and Sky will only reduce prices if they really have to and i cant for one minute see that happening in the near future. Mind you something needs to change in the current financial climate, many people will see a price nearing £50 for the lot a step too far. I know i do.
  • Hmm... well I got through to their Scottish call centre today. Got offered the £49 Sky HD box, but they were looking the £30 installation charge, and £10/month for the HD mix.

Told them that was a bit much as I was already giving them £38/month (for the past 6 years) and was there nothing they could do about the HD mix charge. Apparently not as she said she'd put my cancellation through.

Bit of back of the page maths here and this will probably work out much better for me anyway. The movie channels are useless, and most of what we watch is available on freeview, freesat or freesat from sky.

So was going to be paying Sky £49 + £30 for the HD box, plus £30/month (the 4 mixes we wanted to go down to plus the HD mix) which is £439 for the first year

v.s. freesat hd box from argos at £100

Thanks sky, you are saving me money here :T

I've got the full package with HD but minus 2 mixes (£55 p/m) and I've just phoned the cancellation line and he said ok it'll be cancelled by the 31st of this month so I hope I get a call trying to keep me and reducing the price or else it's Freesat HD for me :rotfl:

  • Sounds like those who tried to get the offer from sky were unlucky.

It really does depend if the sky representative is willing to help and has the offers on their screen. They may have used up all their discounts?

Keep trying and insist that your friend got those discounts! It is available because I have got it. Don't give in. Just hang up and try again.

I considered free sat but it only has BBC HD and ITV HD.

Im not one to promote SKY but 26 HD Channels by the end of October is very appealing.

I'm looking forward to HD and think its worth you keep trying to get the maximum discounts.
