I'm currently in the process of changing from a spare Nationwide account to a Halifax HICA. Not going well so far. Halfax managed to open the account with an address that I moved from nearly five years ago so the welcome pack debit card and cheque book went there. I only found this out after calling to find out why I had not received them. I had to raise a formal complaint to rectify this. I have now received and returned the switching form we shall see how it goes. I have a very little faith in the ability of the Halifax to manage things efficiently.

The Halifax wrote to me saying that they refused. I didn't complain, I just prepared the list of DDs myself and sent it to the Halifax Transfer Dept.

That is insanely alarming. Are you seriously saying that Halifax sent you a letter stating that Nationwide had simply "refused", or that they had "failed to comply". The latter being far more ambiguous (although just as unhelpful).

I've never come across this before. What on earth is Nationwide's version of events?

    Hi,
Question : I want to transfer from Alliance and Leicester to Halifax and take up the £100 offer. However I don't have any DD or SO. Only income - automatic tax credit & my wages(wages are a cheque which I have to take to the bank myself)

Will I still qualify? anyonw done this without having any DD or SO?

    thanks guys.

Why not try what I did? I quickly set up a few SOs to my other accounts & my wife's a/c & then let the Halifax switch those. I didn't have any DDs [this was a 'dormant' a/c with Barclays]. The Halifax has switched the SOs OK. (The SOs can be cancelled at Halifax when the dust has settled). Whether my 100 quid will be forthcoming in due course remains to be seen... There's no reason why it SHOULDN'T be but then, I'm a pessimist by nature!
Expect the worst & hope for the best...
  • Anyone know whether you have to transfer all direct debits from old account and close it or can you just transfer a couple across and keep old one open. Just want to try this account out and not close the old one as it's a joint account, don't think my wife would like her account closed!!!
  • Just wanted to add to this thread - I am also currently going through the switching process to transfer my Abbey current account to Halifax for the £100, and have found Halifax to be dreadful. Was told I had to go into branch to find out the details of a credit card I had with BOS but closed 2 years ago, because I had moved house, and they still had the old address, so wouldn't proceed with my application. Why they couldn't find this info while I was on the phone is beyond me.
Letters have been sent with no return envelopes or info leaflets that were supposed to be enclosed. Only received switching forms this week, over a month after applying. Cheque book not yet received. The £100 I deposited in the account took a week to appear, even though I'd filled in and sent all the relevant ID forms, etc. CS not very helpful at all.
Basically, I've had enough - I was only switching for the £100, and have never had any problems with Abbey (my existing bank), so have decided to stick with them and close the Halifax account - the time I've wasted so far just isn't worth the £100. Seems everyone I speak to has had bad experiences with the Halifax too.
  • I'm switching to BoS for better interest rate as well as the £100 sweetener. Just finishing the end of the switching process having applied in May. I've been funding the account with £1000 a month by myself. Salary is starting to be paid into the account from later this month. Direct debits, standing orders, etc have all been transferred. Don't know when I'll get that £100.

OK, tks. I've just finally taken steps to "switch" from Abbey, now they've finally !!!!!! me off [snip] So it'll be interesting to see if the Abbey drags its feet with my myriad DDs & SOs or not.

I'm at the DD switching phase - and my DD's so far are being switched fairly promptly and in an orderly fashion. Abbey seems to be cancelling SOs when switched but not DDs, although that shouldn't be a problem as the originator will presumably take it from one account or the other, not both.

To nicj - yes my initial experience was similar to yours, and they do seem to keep details of old accounts even when closed, as when I first logged onto internet banking there was already an account set up for my old Halifax CC. The problem seems to be with the department that deals with ID docs. Up to that stage they responded very promptly. Then they initially failed to record the ID docs I sent them, and then it took several phone calls to establish they had the right ones and could "liberate" the £100. Since then, however, apart from not sending the return envelope with the DD switch form, everything has gone much more smoothly. Although I do need to phone about a cheque book, which hasn't yet turned up.
  • Has anyone set up this incentive account as a joint account at all? Technically you can't because I get my salary paid into my personal account and the so'd to our joint account. Any tips or hints but by the sound of it - it might be useful to stay put.

As far as I know you don't have to pay in your salary, just a regular payment of £1000+, so it should be OK to set it up as a joint a/c into which you pay enough to pay joint bills.
