I'm looking at getting wireless broadband for my new house, I'm a student and have looked through some of the posts here. I need it to supply 5 people. I was thinking, by looking at what people have said, to use madasafish...do you think it would be good for me to use?
I checked the phone number thing and it says I can get 5.5mb for the area I'm in...will this be enough?

I really don't have much clue about computer things, other than the basics, so please don't start with complex questions or answers! It scares me! haha

    Thanks!

I doubt if the basic MAAF package with 5GB usage per month would be sufficient for five users to share, so you would be looking at the Max Plus package giving 20GB per month which has a normal price of £26 per month with the first six months at £20 i.e. Total for year £275.88. Their wireless router for £25 would simplify sharing your connection although some other providers like AOL are giving these for free with unlimited usage for a lot less cost i.e. £179.88 per annum or possibly less if you haggle - see the AOL thread. It depends if speed is important to you or unlimited downloads with five users sharing. The 5.5Mb that you quoted, is probably the maximum speed that your line could maintain but until you get ADSL Max you wouldn't know!

    HTH

    ;)

We already have the router, we're going into a house that had it before, but we just need to get a isp to go with. I hear AOL aren't that good...I was with them at home for dial up and they were terrible!
The 5.5GB was what I was quoted...I don't want people downloading music, just photos and stuff, so the speed is more important to me.

    Whats ASDL max??

Thanks for you help as well :)

ADSL Max is the technology that gives upto 8Mb speeds dependant on your specific line, rather than capped speeds of say 512Kb, 1Mb or 2Mb. ADSL Max is not without problems though and many have found that they are worse off when they have been upgraded to it. see here.

I must say that the customer service is excellent but as I jumped from a 1 gig to a maximum in my area of 3 gig, the speed seems slower than my Orange ISP which is dissapointing. I also find that the router quite often decides not to let my internet connection through for some strange reason. I check the cables and USB and they are fine. Strange.
  • Hi Hubballi,

    Hmmmm....

Could you please PM me your Madasafish username and I'll have a look?

I have just rung up madasfish as my contract ends 4/10/06 and am going to be leaving to go to talktalk who cant sign me up till end of oct.Madasafish said that I would have to ring up on 4/10/06 to give my notice and get my mac code then as its only valid for 30days. I will pay for the extra month I am using the service. Is this correct?
  • Hi Toothwiz,

Firstly, are you sure that you want to go to Talk Talk? It's okay to go, but just make sure that you've done your research! There is plenty of reading material on the subject here on MSE and you can find additional chat on the forums on ADSL Guide.

If Talk Talk can't sign you up until the end of October it sounds like what my team member is having you do is give your notice right after a billing date. I'm assuming that your billing date is around the 4th of the month.

Your subscription covers you for the month forward.

You will need to keep your services with us live until your MAC is used - thus you will still be using our services during the month of October which you paid for on 04.10.06 and should carry you through 03.11.06.

Because the two services need to overlap, and it usually takes 7 days for a migration to occur, I would highly recommend getting Talk Talk your MAC by 25 October at the very latest (but confirm with Talk Talk about how long it will take to migrate you over).

If you'd like me to review your account in specifics, I'd be happy to do so - please just PM me your username!

    Kind regards,
    Samara

    Samara,

Are there any plans to increase the 5GB limit on the Max Broadband packages.
I have found that on a couple of occasions I have gone only just over, but then incur extra charges.
There seems to be a large gap between the 5GB limit and the 20GB limit.

My package is now up for renewal, and a slightly larger limit is one of the options I am looking to achieve.
  • Hi Gary,

I'm afraid that I don't have any new news since last time. We are expecting an announcement from BT regarding wholesale pricing and this will impact the direction that we take with usage.

In the meantime, I do see what you're saying - there should be an intermediary package of 10GB.

    Kind regards,
    Samara
