Guess I'll just have to send them a letter asking what this is for, as definitely never had two Barclaycards.
Hi Reggie256,
Sometimes when a debt is passed to a debt collection agency the reference number may change.
For example: if the company that is now looking after the debt uses 13 digit reference numbers, instead of 16 digit numbers, then they will issue another reference. It can be very confusing but if you have not had 2 Barclaycards then it is probably the same debt.
Regards

Thanks for the Advice Amanda - much appreciated!
The confusing thing is that the 'new' debt collection company (1st Credit) quote the reference as 'Barclaycard account number', and the digits start as those on a Credit card would (i.e 4929xxxxxx), but as noted is 13 digits rather than 16.
I have sent them a letter anyhow, and enclosed a copy of the letter from HFO confirming that I cleared the account that they were dealing with.0 -
Sent a letter to them, Recorded delivery, on Friday (23/10/09) asking that they clarify what the account was in relation to as per my earlier posts - having checked Royal Mail's website can confirm my letter, which also had a copy of my 'paid in full' letter from HFO Collections, was received on 26/10/09.
I today received a letter offering a 'Discount' of 50%, to be paid by 31/10/09, which reduces the balance to £609.26.
This seems rather suspicious to me, and I don't intend to pay anything as not at all convinced that I owe anything and certainly won't take them up on this 'offer'. As I've said earlier in this thread, I only had one Barclaycard and I paid the balance of that in full to HFO collections on 23/03/09.
I am admittedly questioning if this was a response of sorts to the letter I sent though - what do others think?0 -
Don't pay anything, just wait for a definitive response to the prove it letter you sent.
The letter you received was either auto generated and sent, or they got your letter and have not yet been able to prove it, thus have sent this demand for payment, in an attempt to make you pay up for a debt which they can't prove you owe. They are after all just after money.
Worth noting, OFT Guidelines
2.4 Examples of unfair practices are as follows:
f. pursuing third parties for payment when they are not liable
2.6 Examples of unfair practices are as follows:
h. ignoring and/or disregarding claims that debts have been settled or are
disputed and continuing to make unjustified demands for payment
2.8 Examples of unfair practices are as follows:
i. failing to investigate and/or provide details as appropriate, when a debt is
queried or disputed, possibly resulting in debtors being wrongly pursued
k. not ceasing collection activity whilst investigating a reasonably queried or
disputed debt.Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies0 -

Although jumping ahead of myself a little, am I to assume that if the debt isn't owed (or they can't prove what it is for) it'll be removed from my credit report? Not really sure how such things work.0 -
If you do not owe any money because you had already paid it off, then your report should already be upto date. I assume your barclays account still shows as a balance outstanding, this should be set to closed and satisfied as you paid it in full previously.Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.

Still not sure that the 'offer' letter wasn't auto-generated, as you suggested, could still be the case. Eitherway, will be interested to see what they come back with in response to the letter I sent.0 -
A week later and still no reply - I know there is a postal strike, but still.........0

quite common Reggie. 1st Credit wrote to me about a year ago in my maiden name (married 7 years ago) about a supposed outstanding debt. I replied with the prove it letter and never heard another word from them.MF aim 10th December 2020 :j:eek:MFW 2012 no86 OP 0/20000

Another problem I have is my girlfriend. As much as I love her, she is a little paranoid about credit-related matters (her mum used to work for a bank) and usually takes the stance that it would be better to 'just pay it' so that it's done with. She did agree that this account is suspect seeing as I paid a large balance to Barclaycard earlier this year and did agree with me sending a letter asking Worst Credit what the aledged account was for (since, as stated, I only ever had one Barclaycard).
I will say though that it is safe for me to assume that, if Worst Credit don't write to me or I don't get anywhere with obtaining proof of the debt, she'll tell me to pay it off anyway.
Not the easiest situation.0
