I have an account with Nationwide where I have just been charged £280 for being overdrawn for 2 days over the Xmas period. I wrote and asked nicely if they would reduce these fees as they seemed excessive, but I've had the standard reply which appears other members have received when claiming the whole refund for 6 mths. I'm really angry as I only asked for a consideration in reducing the amount they charged. I now want to go the whole hog and reclaim the lot, but I'm concerened as I have an authorised overdraft and if they close my account they could recall this and I'll be really unstuck as I don't have £1270 to repay this. Is there any advice out there please?Light Bulb moment 12 October 2006 - Happy Birthday to me!

Unfortunately, Nationwide seem to be one of the worst banks for asking people to close their account after they have claimed. If they do this, you would have to repay any overdraft you have. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Hi, i am having a battle royal with nationwide, they are fighting all the way, they are now contesting my court claim that i put in with northampton court.
Has anyone else been taken that far?
To those that are sending letter to pipers way in swindon, this is a better address:
Nationwide Building Society
Member Account Servicing
1st floor Electra House
Farnsby Street
Swindon

Hope that helps.0 -

Another winner. After them telling me they could not send me a cheque becuase the account was still open and they would not withdraw the money from there I said that's fine I'll just let the court do it's worse to you and apply for Judgement by default (on the basis we disagreed on the fiigures)
That's fine they said to be followed half an hour later by another phone call saying they'd misunderstood me and they would indeed offer to send me a cheque immediately if I called off the aaction but did I understand that the account would be closed.
I've told them providing the cheque arrives by the 10th Feb I won't pursue the court action and I'll agree with their calculations as a "gesture of goodwill" which it isn't cos when I checked they were right and I was wrong :rotfl:0 -
Having looked through the forum, it seems to me that there aren't many successes against Nationwide.
Is that because they don't have many account holders, or does anyone know of any instances where the Building Society have won.
I only ask because I am at the 14 day letter stage, and want to go forward with my eyes wide open.0 -
I have just logged into my online banking service, and have seen that £150 of charges have been relabelled as interest. ?!?!?!?!?!?
I'm at the 14 day letter stage, and have DPA statements proving that these were charges. What are the Nationwide plaing at ???0 -
I bet they would tell they are 'protecting their shareholders'.......mmmm...got our process numbers today...while I don't relish court they have made me all the more determind to go there, and I woud love to send the baliffs in...
dont get put off Orlwaysbroke, thats their idea. I transferd most of my dosh to my new account, did it electronically...I think nationwide have sent it by pidgeon as it still hasnt arrived!!! The more people who want their money back the better as they then have less opportunity to play silly *****
good luck...0 -
Hi all,
This is my first post on this wonderful site so please be gentle with me:
I have written to Nationwide regarding claiming back bank charges. I have sent Request Charges letter and Threaten With Court letter.
I have had replies to both saying that they will not pay back the charges and reminding me of their T&C's.
What should be my next step?
I forgot to say, and most importantly....I am a Nationwide employee although I have not disclosed this to them in my letters.
Would they really want to close an employees account? Am I playing with fire?
Thanks in advance0 -
Thank you Rex_Mundi for your help
We did fill in 3 copies of N1, however we only took two to the court and kept 1 back for our records! I hadn't read anywhere about getting it stamped by the court, I thought it was purely for our records. We wait in hope of getting the case number through the post (hopefully before the weekend) so we can monitor it and get as much success as possible.
I am MOST grateful!0 -

Next step is to send the letter to say you will now be taking court action.

I wouldn't disclose this now!
Would they really want to close an employees account? Am I playing with fire?
Thanks in advance
