Hi there. I have been a long time lurker and have just found this thread. I have loads of old gold but not sure of its carat. If I take it to a jeweller, will he charge me to tell me what it is? Forgive me if its a bone question! Also, if I put down that the weight is say 10gms and its actually 12 gms, do they give you the price for the correct weight or the weight you state? Thanks very much0

Redlady
They will give you the price for the correct weight and they will separate it out into the different carats. I had a very approximate weight for my stuff and no idea of the carat values so I just got a quote for 9ct. The email you get from them once they have checked your gold gives a breakdown of the various carats and mine, unbeknown to me, consisted of 9, 8 and 22 ct. There will be a list of weights of each type of carat and the price they are paying on your particular day.
Hope this helps.0 -
Took my mixed gold jewellery to local jeweller who quoted me £350, then upped it to £456. He offered £35 for a 1/10 Krugerrand. I decided to send it all to HGM instead. I posted it yesterday pm and have just received £662 in my account, including £65 for the Krugerrand. The email they send is great, with a proper breakdown of how much you have sent and are getting paid. I highly recommend this company and have posted it on my home page on FB! :T:T:T:T0

I sent off an old broken chain around 3pm yesterday, just recieved an email saying that £245.39 will be deposited in my account in 3 working days (building society).
Very speedy turnaround :T0 -
Hi all, new here and very interested in this thread!
Does anyone know if HGM accept gold watches?0 -
Kitten Blue
yes, they certainly do accept gold watches0 -
I'm having a similar quandry.
Amongst some inherited old gold bits and pieces, I have a man's small rectangular 14 ct gold watch - Swiss made "CYMA"
A bit of research suggests that the collectors' market might give a better price than the scrap gold market for a vintage mechanical watch..
Try a search on Ebay.
and here are a couple of UK based chat forums on second hand watches:
http://www.watchtalkforums.info/
http://www.tz-uk.com/
The latter allows visitors to search it, thus finding discussions about the make and type of watch.
If you want to go "across the pond", there is a mass of information here:
http://mb.nawcc.org/archive/index.php
Watch collecting seems to be a mainly male sports-car-on-your-wrist activity.
Ladies second hand watches seem to be treated more as jewellery, so the scrap gold value is probably a good guide to the total value unless it is an iconic marque or studded externally with jewels.0 -
Many thanks thacky and John.
I emailed HGM to enquire and they said yes, but they get rid of the workings and glass etc.
I'll check out those links, it's a 1970's ladies gold Omega with gold strap, so I know not vintage or anything, but it cost a fair bit back then, so it might be more lucrative to sell it elsewhere as you say.0
