A mate has dropped round a Diamond Supra serial modem complete with software CD and so we cracked open a beer. I'll have a go with it tomorrow morning!
Right. All systems go it appears.

I seem to be able to set the clock and send the area code and off-peak times without an error message - but when I try to write the routing or carrier table I get this 'Abort!' message.

    Abort.jpg

I guess I have to clear my routing and carrier tables?
  • Thats an abort button you click it to cancel the process - the status window above shows the line that is being dialled - your screen shot had got as far as line 7. If you hear nothing it may be a problem with the modem speaker, or its external volume control if it has one.

Clearing your tables is optional, but only lines with content will be overwritten, so if you write 9 lines and your previous config had 10 then line 10 would remain untouched.

So the giant 'ABORT!' button is not indicative of a problem?

I sometimes get a dialing (beep, beep, beep) sound when it starts a process, but not while it is in progress....Should it?

Should the red LED on the dialler be on (or flashing) throughout the update process? It doesn't. Just when it starts and ends I think (desktop computer upstairs, box downstairs, long extension cable - checked to be working - joining the two)

I suspect I might still have a modem issue....

    That makes sense.

Sorry to ask so many simple questions but while the process may be clear to you, reading through the thread which consists of disjointed problems and answers concerning older versions of the spreadsheet that have been resolved, changed and/or altered so it is somewhat confusing to someone who has just come across this solution to the problem of the loss of the CWclient server.
  • No, had I used longhand it might have read "Please press this button if you wish to abort the dialling process after the current number has been dialled"

Don't know, the results can be modem specific - on mine I hear each string being dialled, a pause then the next string being dialled and so on until they are all done.

As for the red light, I have never watched it so I dont know

I understand, and should anyone want to volunteer to write a definative set of instructions, I am more than happy to let them.:rotfl:

So, to check the modem (Diamond Supra connected to COM1 and checks out okay in XP) I tried using Connect4free. No dial tone.

So I changed my extension cable. No dial tone.

Plugged extension direct into socket. Dial tone. Tried original cable. Dial tone.

Plugged extension into ADSL filter. Dial tone.

Plugged extension into Orchid with no ADSL filter. No dial tone.

Plugged Orchid back in with ADSL filter (as it was) connected extension. No dial tone BUT the telephone has dial tone on either ports of the Orchid!

Orchid dialler is on the main BT socket I have internally wired extensions with a TiVo on one and Linksys router on another and everything else seems to work. (Even had a go with the TiVo unplugged in case the REN value was too high. No dial tone)

    Stumped.
  • REN is irrelavent in this context

the Orchid is generating the dial tone for the handsets plugged in to it - it sounds to me as though you have an intermittant break in your telephone extention lead which is making & breaking as it is flexed

A everything is out of the loop of the dialler. I know. But I thought anything is worth considering at this stage!

Two extension cables gave me identical results so I really doubt it. And neither cable was being flexed at all when I was dialling.

I can dial out as long as I do not connect through the Orchid. I can't if I do. It appears that the Diamond Supra doesn't work through the Orchid which really does not make much sense as it is a pretty simple 56k serial modem....
  • my last thought, I can think of nothing else, the adapter in the orchid to make the uk format extention lead fit the us style socket - could that be faulty? I am assuming that you dont need that when connecting to your wall sockets, but do when using the orchid (I'm further assuming that your orchid has the us style soockets the same as mine does)

If it is not that then I too am stumped

Right. After a long ponder I guessed that the problem might be the computer and not the modem(s) or spreadsheet so decided to try another - I dug out an old box that booted up with XP, installed the original USB Creative Blaster (with the most up-to-date driver I could find - 20 Dec 02!) and it again installed on COM4 again, but seemed to work when I tried to run the macros.

I disconnected the Orchid and brought it up to the computer to see what happens when I try to program it (I plugged it in to a phone line - don't know if it needs to be in order to be programmed though?) The modem dials a number sequence, the Orchid box clicks away for a bit and the red LED glows and seems to stay on while it is being programmed. This dial, click, LED on then off happens for every number to be done - 8 x Carrier codes and 32 Routing codes for me along with the area code, off-peak times and clock - took less than 10 minuets in all I's guess.

So my problem was (is) with my aged old computer - something stopping the COM ports behaving correctly. Meh. Sorted for now.

As an 'outsider' I have to say that a simple 'how-to' might be a good idea as the thread(s) has become rather top heavy to wade through for what needs to be done.
  • Glad you got there - the orchid will probably loose it's time setting when you unplug it to move it back - dialling the string to reset the time is a fairly easy task to do by hand though, and the spreadsheet will display it for you.

As someone with a fresh view of the system without the mental clutter that goes from being so close to the project you probably do have a clearer overview of what a new user needs, your offer to write a 'back to basics' how-to is a generous one and I thank you.

If you post it here in the first instance and then I can look at including it in with the main application in future releases.
