You're forgetting that it's to do with confidence as well as the actual strength of the currency. The UK could still end up having to seek a bail out from the IMF combined with having decided to print money - and for this reason, the Euro is a much safer bet.

You also forget that the Euro is a strong reserve currency, second only to the dollar. I think it's very unlikely that it'll be getting a 'beating' anytime soon.

I am by no means an expert in this, but I have to disagree with you here. The Euro currency has never been in a recession, never mind one like this. Each Euro member has got their individual problems and there's not one solution that can please all. These are going to be testing times for the euro because they lag behind the curve. Although unlikley, it will only take a member to withdraw and we could see the euro tumle by as much as 60%.

Whereas the pound has been through tough times before and it will pull its self out of this because people will go back to investing where they feel secure and confident.

    Hi All,

Im new to this website, but was hoping to find some help and advice.

Myself and my family (partner and 3 kids) go away to France in 2 weeks, and obviously the money aspect with such a large family comes into play. I am looking for the best deal on £ to Euro exchange and was wondering if anyone here could advice where is best to get my currency.

A friend as already advised that the weekend is the worst time to get money changed, not sure why, but it seems to be right. Now its just a case of finding somewhere to get the best value for money. I have seen people post that the rate is at somewhere between 1.14 and 1.15, but the best deal i have found so far as been 1.18????

    Please help
    Adrian...

The Nationwide Flex account debit card is probably the best way of acquiring currency via ATM withdrawals, especially in Europe - today's rate is £1 = €1.15. If you go in 2 weeks and do not already have the account, you probably don't have time to open one and receive the card.

Travelex online rate today is 1.1082
M&S online rate today is 1.0971

If you're only going to look on the high street, most will only show their daily rate each morning, so today's 'best' may not be tomorrow's.

Generally, high street rates are pretty poor.

And don't forget to take into account other factors such as commission and the rate they will give you when you cash in any unused currency.

If you go on 12th June, you would be unlikely to receive your card by then - mine took around two weeks, from memory..
