The one thing I don't understand is how the Insurers know how long I've been abroad for?
I've been Snowboarding twice this year, the last time completely independent of any travel agents. :j
If I could afford to go again(sadly not) I would probably go over the 17 days allowed. I ought to be uninsured then but how can they know?
Better make it clear I have annual multi-trip insurance

My travel insurance is free! :j

When I got myself an Alliance & Leicester current account, not only did they pay me for switching, paid my girlfriend for recommending me, paid me for recommending a friend, and gave me an excellent (market leading?) interest rate, they also furnished me with free multi-trip worldwide annual travel insurance. Each trip is limited to 30 days, but there's no limit on how many trips, and no total limit on number of days.

I've been through the terms & conditions with a fine toothcomb and read all the small print and I haven't found a catch. It appears to offer as much cover as most other annual travel insurance packages, and more cover than many.

I'm a bit perplexed as to why Martin hasn't mentioned this insurance in the article. If I've missed it, I apologize. If I've missed a catch in my travel insurance t&c then please let me know asap!!

Edit: I just had a quick look on the A&L website. It seems maybe they don't offer this as an incentive any more. I think I'll check if and when my cover expires before I next go away. :undecided

We have travel insurance with a Natwest account too: I did have cover with my Lloyds TSB account but downgraded the account and so lost it. I would be curious to know if this is good cover, as it does appear to be having scanned the policy.

I was also curious as to why Martin had not mentioned these policies in his article as they do not appear to be unusual, although they do only seem to come with current accounts that have a monthly fee (unless in credit by X amount).

Any thoughts? This is my first post so be kind!!
  • This may be of interest to any over 80 year old intrepid travellers. I have found Egg.com to be the cheapest when arranging travel insurance for my mother - she is now 81 and enjoys good health - I'm still getting her a sensible priced insurance.

    Hi

The reason I didn't mention A&L is that it ended its free travel insurance offer about 7 months ago. Those who signed up before hand still get it but its being downgraded to European rather than worldwide cover (and to pay to upgrade isn't that cheap). It used to be in the article

As for other accounts giving it, they all have a fee (spit spit spit yeuch, total waste of money in most occassions) which means I wouldn't consider them - the fee is usually MUCH more than the insurance would cost.

And bluebell, I hope you dont think im being mean, welcome to the site, I promise im spitting at fee paying accounts not at you :)

Hello is this xyz insurance (name withheld)
    Yes - you're not covered
but - I lost a bracelet on holiday
    Sorry you're not covered
    But........

We have a yearly family policy with one the best buys in Martin's list. We tried to claim for a genuine loss but got nowhere. Cheap may be the best policy if you don't have to claim.

I would like to see a list that take willingness to cover genuine claims into account as chaep may not be best.

I have read all the tips about buying insurance but have found some links difficult. I want to buy a single trip insurance for my autistic son who has epilepsy. None of the online sites seem to be interested in knowing about his condition but I am worried that if they don't about it will he be covered, for example if he breaks a leg and needs special arrangements for our return journey? Or will insurers say I didn't declare that he had a pre existing condition and refuse to pay out? We are only going on a normal package trip for 1 week (Europe) and won't be doing any dangerous sports, he will be 20 on the date of travel.

Since turning 70 I found that most insurance companies will not touch me. I have a RBOS Royalties Gold a/c that will cover me but I have to pay an excess. However since opening a SMILEMORE a/c I find they will cover me and my wife, no problems. I am 74 and the wife is 70 :j

  • I am brand new, please be patient if this has been covered. I haven't been able to find any info on the subject of travel insurance for longer periods. My husband and I spend up to 6 months in the US during the winter. Usually we do three months before Xmas, back for the festivities and then a further 3 months. Any advise please?
