Default Free Sky+ box plus £50 M&S vouchers

UPDATE MARCH 09. Sky has extended this offer until Thursday 26 March.

What's this about?

Sky's offering this deal to MoneySavers in response to the error it made back in January for giving us permission to publish a code in the weekly email. (See the original thread)

The Full Low-Down

New Sky customers can get a years contract with a free Sky+ box (which is the famous hard drive recorder with live pause etc) plus £50 M&S vouchers before 24 March. The basic package costs £16.50 a month.

What you get
  • Free Sky+ box (usually worth £99)
  • Free 2Mb broadband (if you rent your line from Sky rather than BT)
  • Free weekend calls
  • £50 M&S vouchers
What you don't get
  • Installation, which costs £30
  • Telephone line rental, which you get from BT or Sky at £10/month.
How to get the deal

1. Go to this special Sky page before 26 March
2. Pick the package you want and check out.

Can this be beaten?

As a straight open to all deal, you can just sign up for a Sky+ box it's untouchable. Yet for those willing to spend time and play, there are some alternatives that are worth considering.
  • Forum Type Codes. There are often a few codes flying about (possibly even on this site) which can get you a slightly better deal (roughly £25 cheaper) on a Sky+ box - though currently Sky says none are active.

Yet these codes are given by Sky for specific individuals as promotional deals, and it is within its right to block you using them even after the fact (this is what happened with the original deal, it first said a code was "fine to tell people about", but actually it wasn't").

Rather than using them directly, the best thing to do is get the details of those details, phone its call centre, quote the deal and haggle to get it to match it.
  • Cashback Sites for HD Deals.

Currently Sky has a promotion on that you can get a Sky HD box (ie higher definition) for £49, free installation, £30 M&S vouchers. So on the surface it looks like this is only £50 more than the deal above and you get HD.

Yet the subscription for HD is £9.75 a month more expensive, meaning over the year its actually nearer £170 more.

However, if you sign up for this deal via a special cashback website, you can get £120 cashback for it as well, that takes us back down to roughly the original £50 difference. Do remember though, while it usually works, cashback from cashback sites is never 100% guaranteed.

For those new to cashback, for more info on how it works see the Top Cashback Sites guide and to find the highest payer, the Cashback Sites Comparison Site.

Yet if you do have an HD TV, and want the HD box, it's a pretty good deal.
What is Sky+

It's a hard-drive recorder which means you can live pause and rewind live programmes, and record things without tape. It's been called Sky's "killer application" and is rated by the Which? as the top box of its type.

Note there is no commercial relationship between Sky & MSE over this deal, as explained it's purely a 'sorry' for incorrect info given previously.

I would make sure that you get the vouchers....I ordered similar deal online in december, deal was order online, pay £49 for sky+ box and get free install, would get £15 credit on first bill and £50 M&S vouchers within 28days, month later called them...told 28working days...called at that time and told would be sent to the correct team to issue vouchers...march 10th and still no vouchers, called today and was told to write in to customer services, asked to speak to someone from the voucher team but couldnt do that so he put me through to someone in a different customer service team...he said that he could email the voucher team and give them another month to issue the vouchers, told him that I didnt really want to have to phone again in april to get to this point and could we not just jump to the point where it could be sorted today---given £50+ credit on account, even better that the vouchers imho

Good offer but just make sure you get the vouchers!

My daughter has Sky+ & every few months she gets sent two coupons for a relative or friend to sign up. The new customer gets free sky+ box broadband telephone etc package & my daughter would get £50 M&S vouchers per new person. You still have to pay installation fee.

Default No vouchers!!!

I went for this the last time it was on this site. Sky wouldn't give me the deal advertised so I ended up paying £25 for them to install (the ad had claimed free installation). My third bill still has not seen the £15 discount they promised on the first bill and my vouchers never arrived. What's worse is they don't make clear who you contact regarding the vouchers so I'm in limbo!!!

I should have made my point aboves clearer. Not only would Sky not offer me the Sky+ offer (said it was an error and should never have been advertised) but they charged me for the installation of the standard Sky box (claimed installation was free!). Great that they are correcting this mistake now but what about those of us who trusted them the last time and paid for the luxury of a standard box, did not get the promised £15 discount and did not get the £50 in vouchers. Feels like I have been scammed. Would recommend people who are considering joining Sky to do so with their eyes wide open.

Am thinking of paying people £50 in M&S vouchers NOT to join them.... if only I had the money...

I have been wanting to go for a Sky deal for a while now and this one seems very good. Trouble is that you can only get the free Sky broadband if you pay line rental to Sky I think, which means I have to give up my cheap '18185'! Just free weekend calls are not going to do it in a household with three teenagers!

Is there a way around that?

They gave me Sky+ free about 18 months ago when I threatened to cancel my contract. I wasn't really bothered about it at the time, but the guy who installed it said knowingly that "I'd understand" once it was in. I have to say it is great - actually cuts down the amount of tv I watch as I record decent stuff and fastforward the ad breaks.

Highly recommend this deal

I wouldn't hold your breath on the vouchers front, I had to wait ages to get my £50 and it took several phone calls for them to eventually come.

I was trying to take advantage of the HD+ box for £49, but as a current Sky customer, I can't have it I live in a house full of males who dominate Sky, I want my own; its not too much to ask seeing as how our original sky+ thing cost us close to £400 and we have the full package which costs around £55 per month. For the initial cost of £49 for the box, we were prepared to pay an extra £19-50 a month (£9-75 x2 per month HD and multi-room) but they wont entertain it. BAH! Currently in e-mail contact with Sky but I won't hold my breath

To be honest i'm not too bothered about the vouchers. i'd just like sky+ for free.
i got sent a leaflet a few weeks ago saying i could get a sky+ (NOT HD) box for £49. when i phoned up to order it, the guy seemed unsure if it was going to be £49, and put me on hold twice, the second time i sat there on hold for 10 mins and then hung up - not wasting my phone bill on those idiots. I know sky are a bunch of very sly people, but i really do want sky+ as i know how handy it is. aint paying the current £99 for it though.

Also, i tried the link and its still coming up as not workin - will keep on trying though.
Thanks xx

I had cancelled sky. left it a week, and called to say I was thinking of coming back, was offered free Sky+ and free install. Did not have to sign up to Broadband or Phone. Installed Monday, took 4 hours for system to activate, then perfect. Switching to this and Phone and Broadband with talktalk, has saved me £31 a month, with free calls to landlines day and night, and free Sky+.

Thanks MSE

Am I right in thinking if you were an existing customer (not sky+) and they would't entertain giving you "owt for nowt" that you could order as a new customer you'd get whatever offer is on then cancel your old account once you new dish /sky+ box is fitted so you wouldnt be without sky whilst waiting for the new equipment to arrive?

A friend, who is an existing customer, called in, and got it free with free install, but had to sign up for another 12 months. They seem to be afraid of freeview customers. She told them she now got freeview and was thinking of turning Sky off when her contract ends. Be persistant.

Good Luck

I wonder if it would work if I signed up as a new customer in MY name as opposed to trying to upgrade through my husbands account?
