Where are you staying in Vegas.

I normally use valet parking unless the car park is quicker. I have never been worried about safety in an hotel carpark . I tip $2 on collection. I have heard horror storys of cars coming back with dents in but touchwood it hasnt happened to me.

    Thanks photome

We're staying at The Excalibur in LV.

I'm assuming you start by driving up to wherever the valet parking is.... what happens then?

TBH it's more the safety of parking in LA DH is worried about (in movies people always get held up/mugged/carjacked in parking garages!) but the hotel in LA charges $39 for valet parking, the public parking garage next door is about $10.

I expect to have to tip the valet and I'm happy to do so, but the $39 a day charge (x3 days) feels like quite alot just to park a car!

yeah in Vegas just follow the signs for the Valet (usually the front entrance ) someone will greet you , help you with any bags , issue you a ticket and then you just leave the keys in the ignition. only tip when you recollect the car.

as for LA $39 sounds about right for a popular tourist location / good quality hotel.ask the hotel about car park safety if you are concerned , you probably have little to worry about if it is nice hotel.

LA's reputation for crime is somewhat overblown by Hollywood movies and TV shows . true LA has a fair few "no go areas" like Compton and Watts .but then again so do most big American cities. assuming you are staying in the tourist area's you really do not have to worry about gang crime ect .

Hollywood does require you to take sensible precautions , like staying on well lit streets , not flashing cash and jewelry , and to carry bags appropriately so they cannot be bag snatched . also be wary of ATM's at night as these are where muggers often operate . also make sure your car doors are locked when traveling in LA to avoid car jacking . anther way you can be victim of crime is when someone has a minor collision with your car and then steals it or your valuables when you stop. if this happens make sure you stop only in well lit , populated public place , or drive to a police station and beckon the other driver to follow. if your unlucky to be the victim of a mugging , a good idea is to carry a "buy off wallet" like i do . basically a wallet with expired cards and around $30 -$50 in cash. i keep my proper cards and cash in a belt loop wallet that hangs inside my jeans . also don't put up any resistance and hand over something to get rid of them.

if your staying near the Chinese theater like we did , you will probably have few problems as long as you don't venture off the main tourist spot on foot. we walked around late at night and never felt threatened there. the rest of Hollywood Boulevard is a dump , plain and simple and has little temp you there if you don;t like nightclubs etc.

if you are staying in Beverly hills you have very little too worry about i would think , as it spends more on it's police force per head than any other district/ town in America . there is very visible police presence all over Beverley Hills .

where in LA are you staying ???
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:

    Thanks for that trets77

We're staying at the Renaissance Hollywood, which is at/part of the Hollywood/Highland Centre.

I emailed the hotel to ask about parking charges as we probabaly won't use the car while we are in LA once we arrive at the hotel, until the morning we leave. We plan to take the Red Line to Universal Studios, and otherwise on foot (Walk of Fame, Chinese Theatre etc). We don't plan to be out late at night as DD will be with us (she will be 13).

In their reply, the hotel stated that "self parking is available in the parking structure adjacent to the hotel at the cost of $10.00 maximum" I assume this is the parking garage for people visiting the Hollywood/Highland Centre.

We are staying 3 nights, so $117/$156 for carparking (depending on how they work it out 3 nights/ 4 days or part therof) adds up!

The "Buy Off Wallet" idea is a good one, I will definitely do that.

I think thats what i'll try then!

Also on emore (so many) question, anyone who has flown Via Chicago from manchester, is there anything special we need to do in Chicago for the transfer, or is it straight forward? I.e if there is any risk of not gettign the connection, is there anythign we can do quickly, directions to run or anything? - Probably just my paronoia setting in!!
We did that exact route earlier this year. As soon as you clear immigration you collect your bags, there is a door at the end that says "AA connection" go through there and someone will take your bags and put them on another belt for you, also you will get info on where to go for your connection. This is in another terminal (but walkable) so just follow the signs. you then come into the terminal where you have to go through security again. a tip here, everyone seems to go to the line that is right at the entrance to the terminal, the queue was very long. If you walk along past that one there are several others with no line at all.
There is not much time between connections so you will need not to dally too much. They were actually waiting for us to board our flight so they could take off, (it was actually 25 minutes before scheduled time) but they do tend to do that in the states, as soon as the last person is on they're off and they do like to rush you.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

But apart from that it's fine!!!
    P.S.
Don't beep your horn at anyone either, I made that mistake once and the guy pulled up beside me and pointed a gun at me!!!

You might want to divert your daughters eyes as well walking down Hollywood Blvd. It's full of sex shops and transsexual, stripper, and fetish clothing stores. It's also the single biggest let down I have ever encountered (apart from Tower of Terror Disney MGM) Give it a miss and walk down Rodeo Drive and Wiltshire Blvd. You might see some film stars, we saw Britney Spears and Tom Cruise.

Its this type of scaremongering that gives people the heeby jeebies.

I have had several 'road rages' in the States and its never amounted to anything other than a few words.

Ill bet when the police pulled you over for a random check they had you on the ground with guns pointed at you

Never had the police pull me over. Don't think I was scaremongering, just giving advice like tretts was, but if you say so, I apologize, and non of the above ever happened.
    There, happy.
