Sainsburys refused to sell OH a bottle of wine

Options
as he was with our 16 yo DD and apparently the two of them together were classed as a 'group' by the cashier and store manager and despite being part of other shopping they decided OH was buying the (red) wine for DD to consume :eek::eek:. OH said it wasn't for her (what 16 yo drinks red wine - if it had been Breezers or similar I could have maybe seen why they were supicious) but for a dinner party we had last night and the cashier said "I don't believe you". Manager was called and said same as cashier so OH paid for the rest of the (non-alcoholic) shopping and left.

Leaving DD outside, OH went back in the shop to buy the wine assuming that as he is 48 and was no longer in a 'group', he would be served. He picked up the bottle and walked towards the tills and the manager chased him through the aisle yelling "put it down, put it down, we're not serving you":confused::confused::confused::confused:

So be warned - do not take your children shopping with you to Sainsbury's if you are buying alcohol as they will not serve you :D:D:D

This can happen in just about any supermarket based on other people's previous experiences.
  • This seems to be happening more and more.

Thing is it isn't illegal to give a 16 year old alcohol at home!

I think supermarkets are very conscious of the cost of breaching alcohol laws - not so much the cost of the fine but the damage to the reputation of the company.

There must have been something about OH and DD's collective behaviour that triggered suspicion, rightly or wrongly. At the end of the day an establishment has the right to refuse to serve individuals, as long as it is not on the gorunds of sex, age, race, religion, sexuality or disablity.

So now we can't take our children shopping :confused: What kind on country do we live in. As a working mother I quite often have to shop on the way home from school and the kids come in to help me - it would seem that I now can't do that.

it's ridiculous - this has happened to me on a number of occasions now - and just like the OP I've bought alcohol that teenagers probably wouldn't touch anyway.

My daughter comes shopping with me in the hope that she can persuade me to buy more 'goodies' ..................not for a 4 pack of Boddingtons !

Maybe supermarkets should provide playpens for teenagers - for their own safety of course lol :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Asda prices are generally better, even with the so-called current promotions.

I don't see why they are doing this. Its perfectly normal to buy a bottle of wine or two with the weekly shop. My daughters only 5, so haven't had this problem yet, but shes big for her age, so who knows.

To be honest, I prefer internet supermarket shopping nowadays. Much easier, but there are times I use my local shops.

Their 'behaviour' was that OH was doing the shopping (French bread, Gruyere cheese, beef stock and a bottle of red wine) and DD, who had been for an interview at another store came and found him and joined him at the checkout as he was queueing - hardly suspicious methinks

I completely understand that we have a major alcohol problem in this country with young people, and that stores can get hugely fined for selling alcohol to minors, but some common sense surely should apply when a father and daughter are out shopping together and, having asked the question about who the alcohol was for and being told it was for my OH's consumption, the cashier shouldn't have, effectively, called him a liar.
