Fake Sky Digital Repair Plan Scam

Options
I have received a letter and two phonecalls about renewing my sky digital repair plan from a company called Sky Digital Repair Plan Ltd. I called sky as I knew my plan was not due for renewal until September and they have informed me that this company has obtained customer's details somehow and are offering a plan which is not connected to sky. Please be aware if you get a letter or call, the sales people are very pushy and asked me for my bank details over the phone (obviously I didn't give them though!) Apparently this has appeared on watchdog at some point but I didn't see it.

There have been a numbe of previous threads around these companies. Sky often get the blame for passing on details, I myself blame the installers as I cannot see how Sky would benefit from giving competitors to their own insurance information.

I got a call regarding this and so did my parents. I know that the installers must have passed on the info rather than Sky because they had my name for both, rather than my parents name on one contact, which I had given for installation purposes.

I don't understand why, under data protection legislation, Sky doesn't impose contracts on its installers saying that they are not allowed to sell on their data. It would nip this in the bud once and for all. Given that these companies are selling a competitive product to Sky I don't see how it could be argued to be a restraint of trade either.

Come on Sky, get your finger out and stop your details leaking like a sieve. I wouldn't expect Royal Mail to sell on the details of parcels I've bought, and I don't expect you to allow your installers to pass my details on either. Stop passing the buck!

I've had letters - and have never had Sky or even enquired about subscribing. So there may be no one selling Sky customer details to anyone. It is just that the company tries it on, knowing that there are a lot of SKy customers out there.

In my case it would have had to be the installers that gave the information out. Who else would have my address as at my parent's house and relating to Sky? I bought it for them as a present so they had my contact name. I left home over 20 years ago and have changed surname since!

    I have had this too

If you get this fake repair letter or call, let Sky know:

If another company other than Domestic and General has contacted you trying to sell you extended warranty, please send us details of your experience through our feedback form.

think iv been done too.my box upstairs has broken i rang sky about repair they said im not with them, rang the bank and it says on the transaction sky repair services cannot trace any i ring say your not with us any idea what to do next?
  • I received several letters regarding this but it was flagrantly obvious it was a scam because of the crude bold red letters saying warning your warranty is about to expire and such like. I have lost track of the amount of letters i have been sent and also have been phoned asking for my bank details. Only today I actually received a letter regarding the repair plan from sky themselves. Looks genuine this time but still not going to sign up out of principle hehe!
  • I have a 'kosher' sky repair plan deal, taken out when I first signed up to Sky about 3 years ago. Never had any calls from them about renewal etc.

A couple of months ago my Sky box broke down so called the service and they came and fixed box (very efficient I must say!)

About a month ago I then got a call about my cover; they said it's due for renewal etc..

I thought it strange because firstly never had a call before and secondly she couldnt even tell me the renewal date.

I asked her to confirm how much a month I was paying, which she didnt know either and said it was for standard sky box cover (I have cover on normal box and Sky+ box).

She was also asking for my bank details, told her she already has them and I am not prepared to give out my details because I have no proof of who she is!

I simply told her to put it all in writing and I will deal with it when I receive her letter.

Funnily enough, not heard anything since then!

  • We had this company phone up this evening, offering a 3 year plan for our sky box for £150, my husband was just about to give over our credit card details - fortunately stopped him in time.
