A similar scam to this was covered on The Real Hustle last night, you can probably find it on BBC iPlayer if you wanted to swat up on this kind of scam.

    Sorry for bumping this thread.

I had a lovely phonecall earlier this evening from Digital Satellite Warranties (or something), basically saying that I could have an "all-singing, all-dancing" policy for the low-low price of £7.99 a month. I said I couldn't afford it in an attempt to cut the call short (I'm just too-nice to put the phone down on cold-callers) they managed to say that I could have the same policy less "house-moving" cover and having to pay a "small" excess on new boxes for £3.99 a month.

I managed to fob them off with excuses that I have to chat to my non-existent house-mates and that we were considering ditching Sky once the contract period is up, and going back to just Freeview which seemed to shut the seller up a bit.

Although he said he would call again tomorrow, so I'm going to pretend to be at work or something because those warranties ain't worth the paper they are printed on right?

Too right, dont feel you need to excuse yourself, its a scam, so dont feel sympathetic, tell them straight. Or tell them to Foot Off.

I made the mistake of falling for these as when they contacted me it did genuinely happen to be as my existing Sky warranty was running out. I paid what seemed a reasonable price and forgot all about it til I read something on here. When I tried to contact them they got quite agressive but when I looked really properly at the small print I could see they weren't Sky....normally I'm really good about things like this but it came at a time when I had a lot of stress from other things and didn't give it full attention. Anyway, I got through the year with no Sky faults and a month before that policy was due to expire I decided I'd call them to say I wanted to cancel it. Well that very day I got home from work to a letter from them saying my policy was due to expire and I should contact them within 2 weeks if I didn't want to continue...the letter was dated 4 weeks previously!! I rang them immediately and said I'd only got the letter and the woman made out like that couldn't be right...she put me on hold while she went to check and then said it was Ok, as they'd tried to take payment but my card had expired. If that card hadn't expired I dread to think how much hassle I would have had trying ot get my money back.
I'm now with the Sky warranty, though should point out that even that isn't actually Sky itself either

Can I ask why you have warranty for sky anyway?

sureley if it breaks, just stop paying it monthly until they fix it????
  • Is this Satellite Direct all over again?
  • I renewed my Sky Protect OFFICIAL satellite plan and they asked me if I wanted my TV insured and I said no (it was new with 5 year warranty but I never take out extended warranties - a complete waste of money.
But a few months later I found Commerical & General (the real insurers) were taking £12.50 a month out for the TV in addition to the satellite cover. When I rang them they said they HAD NOT actioned it at the time (their Nottingham office) but that a few weeks later it HAD been actioned by their Brighton office WITHOUT my consent.
However they simply cancelled the cover and I have not had my money back - I just keep getting the same letter and on the phone they say SOMEONE must have been spoken to and concented to it. COMPLETELY BOGUS!! Check your statements because apart from the bogus companies ringing out SKY PROTECT will also screw you!!!!

Sky charge £65 for a call out...these people charge well over that for a years cover for a service you will never need in most cases.BIGGG waste of money & the sooner people realise this the quicker these scammer's will go out of business!
  • I HAVE been scammed - what an idiot!! I had a call saying my renewal was due and would I like to renew for 3 years. I did - at £140.00 - the money has gone out of my bank via my Debit card and I am now trying to get it back and also have had to change my card! I wish I'd been mopre careful - I even have a direct debit for the RIGHT Sky repair company but with these pushy guys on the phone I totally forgot that. I will NEVER give my details on the phone again.
