Hi all - just home from the NEC and our annual pilgrimage to the 'Homebuilding and Renovating Show'
Anyway, we happened to come across the Avanti Gas stand and I just wandered on and picked up a free penand was immediately approached by the two members of staff who showed me their special show offer which was 42ppl, fixed for two years.
I said that they were shooting themselves in the foot as they had quoted 43 fixed for 12 months.
Without any further exchange the lady there said that she would amend my contract to the 'show special' if I requested.
I snapped her hand off
Many, MANY thanks to JB for the above information! I went on the NEC website for the Homebuilding and Renovating Show and found any number of free tisket offers (saving some £30), went by train on my pensioner's free Centro pass thus avoiding the £6 parking charge at the NEC - so, already a great saving, but the best was yet to come! I went to the Avanti stand and explained that I had changed from Countrywide to Avanti at the end of September 2012 at 41.9p per litre frozen for 12 months. I asked if it might be possible to freeze for a further 12 months after the initial year. "No problem," came the answer. "I can give you a new contract with your existing 41.9p per litre frozen for two years. You'll have the new paperwork by the end of next week, just complete the details and send it back." That means that I will have had 6 months of gas at 41.9p and will now enjoy another 24 months all at the same 41.9p!
I have to say that Avanti have been a pleasure to deal with right from the start. Pleasant, helpful and efficient phone staff, prompt deliveries and a very good deal! Once again, THANKS JB!:j:j:j0 -
Hi all,
Just an update from a tank owner not under contract, latest order was 42ppl.
Hope all are getting their best deal available.

Hi Bill,
Many thanks - you started this thread back in 2008 (here!)
I see from your previous posts that you bought your above-ground tank off Calor, and Lister Gases have done quite a few of your fills. If you're in Lister's area you must have quite a few possible suppliers: have any refused to fill your user-owned tank?
Can you give us a short tutorial on owning your own tank - pros and cons, please?
Cheers,

It is interesting to hear how keen Avanti seem to be to sign people up for two-year deals with a price fixed at the bottom end of the current market. I could think of several genuine business reasons for this: determination to expand their customer base and a desperate short-term need to generate cash-flow being just two. As a now-ex-Avanti customer, they certainly weren't falling over themselves to compete on price when my contract renewal came up (hence my now being an "ex" customer).
But for all that, I still find a two-year fix at the prices being quoted to be rather extraordinary given the nature of the market and the unpredictability and general trend shown by LPG prices over the past few years.
It would be interesting to hear from anyone who might have a more informed insight into the business direction Avanti are (or may be) taking, or perhaps more generally into what is making such deals viable in the current LPG market, and how we might expect things to develop in the short to medium term. David T, are you still lurking?0 -

As you say, they're either signing people up to contracts then going to jack the price up and tell them to !!!!!! off ala Flogas. They know the price is going to drop in the future (been hearing about Russians entering the gas market this year which is going to drop prices) or they're genuinely wanting to expand their business by any means.0 -

Yes still lurking, but been so long I forgot password, and changed email account. so I have returned under a new account. I have not needed to comment for a while as you are all doing such a good job. Hate LPGs graph is excellent and accurate.
Avanti appear to be trying to grow their market share, they certainly do not have any "special" information which would allow them to fix for 2 years especially now they don't have a refinery. I think you all know it sounds a very good offer, but we wont know for sure for another 12 months. LPG suppliers get little notice of price increases or decreases, we find out around a month before you do. Otherwise I would be trading in the stuff and living in my Ibiza mansion.
They may
add a surcharge, this is not a price increase !!:rotfl:
point to small print allowing them to increase if LPG wholesale increases.
increase anyway allowing you to leave contract, but then charge u removal
or any of the other 59 reasons I have heard why a fixed price is not fixed.
or be true to their word and supply at the fixed price no matter what happens
also remember capped deals are translated as such
We will not increase your price by more than 3.5p in a 6 month period
Translates to
Thank you for allowing us upfront to increase your price by 3.5p every 6 months
LPG prices are a bit like Panto, Its not where u start its where u finish..0 -

Well thank you kindly, sir :beer:They may

Ah, of course. The dreaded "surcharge".
I forgot about that particular nasty little loophole. I posted about Shell's-so-called-surcharges-that-became-price-rises a couple of years ago.
Sadly the original document link is now dead.
Probably lost when Avanti bought Shell's LPG business.......0 -
Just to update the forum on my position and the price.
So I signed a contract with Avanti last week at fixed for 12 months at 42.4, and we moved into the the new house on friday. A letter was waiting from Macgas - sorry to hear your leaving etc and an exclusive offer of 42.9 with £100 gas credit.
The tank is sitting at 15% so i phoned Avanti who said they cant do anything until the switch takes place, and that Macgas would need to fill it.
So i phoned Macgas for a delivery and they did the usual asking who i was going to and at what price. They would honour a "one off delivery" at the 42.9ppl but would be a full fill.
They came back and offered me 39.95ppl with a £100 gas credit off the first delivery fixed for 1 year then no more than 2.5ppl increase in a 6 month period. Quite decent i thought and they would speak to Avanti and cancel off the agreement i signed.
So will see how we get on with them and report any issues positive or negative here.0 -
We are a metered estate in West Sussex, the LPG was installed by the developer in around 2008. As I understand we cannot change suppliers until the last unit has changed hands. This was around 2 months ago. Our problem is that Flogas yes the dreaded Flogas are charging us all 67.38 price per litre. We have several problems eg getting 100% of residents to sign and agree to change. However, the biggest problem seems to be supply. I am having difficulty finding an independent supplier who will take on the tanks and equipment. I know that we have time on our side, but this will be eroded all too quickly if we don't get on with it. Apart from which we are all suffering massive bills in this weather. At 76 I feel the cold:mad:0

Sorry to hear this. ALL the owners on the estate need to be out of contract for you to switch suppliers - which is why it is very difficult because as new people buy/rent they are signed up to new 2 yr contracts .....
Maybe talk to John Rose of ROSE GAS (here). (Use 'Search this Thread' to find more posts about him). I don't know if you are in his area but for an estate he'd probably go further. You could also contact Extra Fuel (in Manchester) (here) - but they'd be subcontracting deliveries (but might be keen for a deal). People (e.g. Mister G) speak really highly of HBS (here) - they're over in Hants - but again may deliver a bit further for an estate.
Please keep us posted. And I hope you get that extortionate price from Flogas down. You could also contact the Office of Fair Trading - Sharon Dias. sharon.dias@oft.gsi.gov.uk (but please check this is still current).0
