  • I had a similar dilemma to you, but went with AvantiGas in the end, as I managed to get them to give me the 43.9 ppl for 1 year fixed (they offered 41.9ppl for 6 months). Also if they rise above 5ppl in any 6 month period your free to walk (standard clause)

I also got them to discount my tank rental to £32.50 p.a.

so they may be worth a little renegotiation....

Although I was tempted by calor, as the £150 does give a fair old saving

In terms of waiting to get a better contract, I again had a similar dilemma, but thought if it was fixed for a year, I would make sure that Dec next year I got it filled to the max, before my deal ran out, meaning this winter and half of next winter would be covered by that price and I could get a new deal before the next winter!

    Thanks for your help!

I managed to negotiate Avanti down a bit further, they've offered me 43.4ppl (+ 5% VAT) fixed for 12 months with tank rental at £60 + 5% VAT per year. The ppl rises after the 12 months are capped at 5ppl every 6 months.

I called Countrywide (current tank owners, not signed contract with them yet) and they've come down from 49.5ppl to 44ppl (+ 5% VAT) fixed until 31 May 2013. Tank rental is the same as Avanti. They've also thrown in £100 credit as I'm a new customer.

However, after the fix ends, they don't offer a capped ppl rise. The guy on the phone assured me that prices don't tend to jump hugely (he mentioned 2ppl as a recent average). However, the lack of a capped ppl rise has, understandably, given me doubts as we'd be at their mercy for 18 months once the fix ends.

I'd like to ask more experienced LPG customers which deal you would go with?

And is anyone with Countrywide? Have you had experience of being out of a fixed period with them and did the ppl price jump up lots after the fix ended?

    Thanks in advance.

We were with Countrywide for two years and although we started off with a very good deal, the price of LPG only ever went up; not once did it go down. We went from, I think, 34p per litre to 58.5p over that period. Our contract ended this September just gone. Our new contract with Avanti is for 41.9p fixed for one year, a huge improvement over Countrywide especially as we use 6000 litres + per year.

Did you try Avanti for a 12 month fixed price? and also, I am pretty sure you'll be able to get your rental down also, if you tell them its a deal breaker :)

I'd definitely opt for the security of 12 months, that way you are only at there mercy for 12 months, also, if you change soon, you'll manage to get most of your winter fills covered for this year and next at the fixed price :)

No, will try and knock them down on the tank rental too, thanks for the tip :)

Avanti were meant to come out last Tuesday to do a tank survey but found out after calling them on Monday that it didn't happen. Good job I followed it up!

They are coming out tomorrow so hopefully I can seal the deal ASAP as we're down to 20% and Countrywide have said they'll only do a no-contract top up once we completely run out and we have to take a minimum of 750 litres at 49.5ppl!

Agree that it's better to fix the price now and fill up this winter/next.

    Thanks again for your help.

..... and boy have I just been horribly ripped off by Countrywide.

As it happens my immediate neighbour was the vendor of the property I've just bought (sale completed on 19 Dec). She thought she was doing me a favour by asking if I wanted some gas put in the tank. Being new to LPG I accepted her offer.

I rang Countrywide to settle the bill, but it was only afterwards I thought something was amiss. They've charged me 70ppl!!! Thank heavens I didn't ask for the tank to be filled, just the min.

At the same time they've sent me a contract, £15 per quarter rental and 54.5ppl.

Luckily I haven't signed and have a chap from Avanti coming out on 2 Jan. Their current quote is 42.4ppl and £60p.a. for rental. Based on the latest posts on here I'll haggle a bit harder, especially on the rental fee.

But blimey heck, I'll freeze before I give Countrywide another penny!!

Hi guys, i was looking for some advice on LPG. Currently i live in a house serviced by mains gas but looking to move more rural.

The property we like has LPG and its not something i know anything about. There is a tank in the garden and the LPG is supplied by BP. From what i gather you pay a rental on the tank and also for the LPG, but what i want to know is, how much are these things likely to cost me? The post code is AB33 (aberdeenshire)

The boiler is old and the sellers have offered to put a new condensing boiler in which should improve efficiency of it. The house is a 4 bedroom detached house. Any help, advice would be appreciated becuase after searching the internet for LPG prices i couldnt find anything.
  • Hi
I wonder if anyone has an opinion on this: We bought a house about 6 months ago that we are renovating and the heating is Flogas from a large tank in the garden. We have not put any gas in the tank, or signed any sort of contract with flogas, but our name is on an account with them and we have paid their standing charge/rental fee for the tank.

We just phoned them to ask them to take their tank away (changing to a heat pump) and they have said that:
    a) We will have to pay them £120
    b) We have to give them atleast 1 month's notice in writing.

Now to my way of thinking, I haven't signed anything to that effect so they should just come and take their property back, but does anyone have any expereince of fighting this?

    thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Bulk LPG.. thread - and possibly to the wonderful world of LPG. If you read a few of the posts on here you may get a flavour of this world...and really think hard about leaving mains gas (despite the pricing policy this is at least less opaque than the LPG 'market').

If you buy the house you like you may wish to switch to heating oil, or some other system. Notts Energy produce relative fuel costs (you need to convert to local costs for Aberdeenshire) and for last month here - and you also need to add servicing costs, as well as capital costs if you are switching fuel. Lots of info on these in various threads on the forum.

New condensing boilers may be more efficient - but don't last long it seems (various posts). Many people have 20, 30 year old non-condensing LPG boilers - so long as you've a friendly (i.e. not a rip-off merchant, and skilled) Gas Safe LPG engineer there is not much economic sense in changing. If the owners are offering a new boiler that changes things, a bit.

LPG - you can either own or rent the tank. Nearly everyone rents from the supplier - which ties you in to an exclusive 2 yr contract with that supplier. Rental should be around £50-75 p.a.. BP is now owned by Flogas (lots of posts on them!) and called Mac Gas.

Probably not many potential suppliers for your post code (despite being rather near to the source of much of the LPG used in the UK!). As you (probably) don't have many potential suppliers it maybe unwise to buy the tank off BP (but more info if you want. Don't buy an old tank!).

Potential suppliers who are members of the trade association UKLPG come up when you put your postcode on their website here. But there are other non-member suppliers - such as Extra Fuel - and you might get a good deal through a farmers' co-op (either local or national such as Mole Valley. See a very useful post by HateLPG here: ignore the post by SD-253 / brandeberryj he refers to)

It might be an idea to ask the owners how many litres of LPG they use a year - and ask them what prices they have been paying.

Please post any quotes you got on the forum - like many others have done (good for checking the offers you get). Check out the graph HateLPG has recently posted here.

You need to get an initial price, how long it is guaranteed for, the maximum price rise, and the rental cost. Suppliers HAVE to give a quote over the phone - subject to a site visit ...but they do not have to quote.

Oh, and maybe think of not having Flogas / Mac Gas as your supplier. Many people would recommend going with an independent (I see you've got Gaulds, J Gas and Gleaner: comments about J Gas at least in this thread - use "Search this Thread" above the posts).

    Good luck!
