  • Wow self sterilising bottles, that's really clever!

On the odd occasion I need to sterilise (usually pump parts) I use cold water and asda version of liquid Milton.

Reuben's cold is worse, Katie. He rattles when he breathes nd his cough is awful :( feel so sorry for the little guy :(

Took him in the bathroom and steamed him with the hot shower, but that didn't seem to do anything.

OH has gone out last minute shopping, I guess I could use this opportunity to wrap his presents...but I'm not, I'm messing about on here lol.

Katie I know what you mean about not minding the wake up if it's for a reason!! It's when it's just because that you start to lose your marbles!!

Marta fingers crossed for weight gain :)

Mw has just left, my lo has gained a bit more, although she still needs an extra 90g for birth weight. As we are in day 10, the mw has said she'll be back to check again on Boxing Day. She told us to continue with the bottle feeding with number 2 teats, poor lo has to gulp the milk but that's what is making her gain weight, so we'll see if we can switch to a newborn teat later on.

I also need to wrap DH presents, I could try at night between feeds I guess.
Is there a birth list? If so, my LO, Victoria, was born the 13/12/2012.

Thanks everyone. They are self-sterilising but I like to be able to put everything in one machine so I know that they'll stay sterile, if that makes sense?

I know how to microwave sterilise them but not sure how to keep them sterile afterwards.:o

Get what you mean Hun! Not sure the answer to that!!

LadyMorticia I'd probably just do 2-3 bottles at a time in the microwave (the timings change depending on how many bottles you're sterilising - if you haven't got the leaflet to hand I know I can get one out of our boxes for the Bump and find them out for you), quickly assemble them as soon as you take them out and they'd be ok for a few hours - if you think about it, if you take a bottle out and about with you for a feed outside the house you'll have to do similar anyway (we've always assembled bottles and taken a carton of ready to feed out with us).

LadyMorticia, my mw also said I could get them partially ready for the day: once they are sterilized, fill them with the water you need if you bottle feed, then close them tightly and put the lid on. If you add breastmilk, just assemble them and close them as soon as you sterilize them. She said they are ok to remain like that. Other than that, Milton tablets are cheap (£1.5 or so for a month's supply), you put the tablet in cold water in the morning and just add stuff during the day, it takes 15-30min to sterilize this way but as long as you do not take it out, it will be ok until you change the water, so the next day, 24h afterwards. The advantage is that you can add stuff at any point, no need to take anything out, and you are restricted by shapes.

Re bottles a mw told me to do that Marta re putting water ready in bottles but I think that's an old method of doing it and guidance has changed. There are a thousand and one methods of bottle prep (as if there isnt enough to think about. The only thing I would say is current guidance is to make as you go (I found that too hard) but it is important that when making up formula the water is hot enough to kill of any bugs in the milk powder (boil kettle and use water within half an hour). I did mw's original method so there is no need to worry but I did not want to not mention this :oc and obviously you don't have to change anything but I didn't want to not mention.
We did use milton sometimes and a tommy tippee version which I think is now disc as it had no odour as such but it was convenient doing a big batch and taking things out as needed.
I can't see anything wrong with doing a couple of bottles at a time as Dizzi says they are used fairly quickly anyway.

Hth and sorry if freaking anyone out re bottle prep I have tried all manner of methods so do not worry !!! Do what your comfortable with ! There is a link to nhs book birth to five which they no longer give out somewhere on this thread posted by kira if you search That give the nhs guidance

Lol Ro, I have just read your post. I think my DH would be more than happy with that, he's done it himself a few times in the past! I just like the unwrapping moment, but yeah, if I do not manage, he'll have to just close his eyes and open them again with every pressie!!

Ro, on second thought, could I get my baby's name removed from the list above? I do not mind posting it here and there, but I rather not have it on the list, where it's easily searchable by name and dob. I stupidly put my real name and my surname's short version when I registered, and I cannot change it now. I feel quite exposed already, and all those extra details would make me very easily identifiable by any of my students or any other people. I hope you do not mind. :(
