£500 for a new toilet?

Hi all,
My mum, who lives in West London, has just told me she needs a new toilet as it is wobbling and there seems to be a leak. She has been quoted £500 for a new toilet (new bowl + fitting etc) which seems pretty steep to me.
Has anyone had a new toilet fitted recently? any idea how much? and is there anything I can do to reduce this price, ie buy the toilet bowl first..?
Any help at all would be useful as I am pretty useless at things like this but want to try and prevent mum from getting ripped off.
Many thanks

You should get a detailed quote, so you know what you are being charged for i.e. WC price, and the work items. They might just say WC = £200, plumbing = £300, in which case ask for details to see if there are any unexpected high costs. Older loos have a different waste pipe arrangement, which may mean moving the soil pipe in the floor to match. Old ones go down, new ones go back, if that makes sense.
The general advice here is to get 3 quotes. Getting more wastes trades' time. Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0 -

There is a huge price range for WCs ...i.e. Bog in a box from one of the sheds to this and beyond. Two loos my OH fits from well known manufacturers include the Twyford Alcona and the Ideal Standard Alto ... for future proofing, both will have readily available spares
Has this plumber been recommended to your mom by a reliable source? Get another quote and compare specifications. Labour costs will be higher in West London.
Let us know how you get on.

Even if it took a whole day and used a half decent pan it should not be more than £250 and that's on the high side.
I bet the screws have rusted away and the wobbling pan caused the leak and all you need is a handyman to repair it.0 -
Get another quote. Get two actually.and is there anything I can do to reduce this price,
No because the labour element will go up.ie buy the toilet bowl first..?
Anyway I agree with D above. Fix the wobble and that will probably fix the leak.

It's a hideous price to be honest, you need to find a plumber that actually wants works, not 1 that over quotes 'cos he's busy;);)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -

Hi.
How can anyone decide that it's a stitch up price without either seeing the job, a photo or a detailed description?

Because some folks know the cost of a bog, the labour needed to fit it and the facts of life;
"If you don't want the job, quote double the rate, if the mug bites so be it"
Based on the info given by the op, ie, no indication of installation issues and no gold plated seat reqd it IS too expensive,

If you havn't seen the work involved you cannot say it's over the top.End of.
How many times have people posted here and revealed more information after the initial post..... quite a few.
I will readily agree with you if I see the extent of the work, until then........

we are talking toilet not central heating
if you seriously say that £500 for this job might be right then you are on the wrong forum0
