You claim in the same manner as the laundry. The shoes / tights etc :-

The allowance may get either your soles or your heels repaired ............. but not both!

    Leave you to choose.;)

  • .....mind you if you wear "safety" (steel toe cap) boots not shoes, (boots cover the ankle) then you will be saving the 20% VAT.
  • Hi, I tried to reclaim the tax on the cost of the laundry of my British army uniform but got a response from HM Revenue & Customs, saying that "free laundry services" were provided for soldiers, so there is no tax relief due.

I have been in the army for 12 years and have not once received these "free laundry services" unless while away on operations.

Has anyone else come across this for soldiers and if so should I be writing a letter to HMRC taking this further?

    Many thanks

    Sarah

The suggestion is that there is a reimbursement by MoD :-

The armed forces don't appear (perhaps as a consequence) in the list where flat rate allowances (the subject of this thread) have been agreed :

  • I remember doing this a couple of years ago, at the same time I claimed back tax relief on petrol. I didn't receive much in the way of cash, but they did alter my tax code.

Ive just come to do the letter for the tax year 2010/11 but have noticed that my tax code is higher than the standard one (which is 774L I think)? Is it worth me claiming or have they increased my tax code to take into account these claims?

Im not really that confident in applying because if that tax code is wrong, knowing my luck I'll end up owing!!

In which case it tends to stay altered. You would normally get a P2 (Coding Notice) where your Code number is different to the norm .... worth having a look at it? Or asking for one to be issued.

  • Thanks for that, I don't remember seeing one. Do I just have to request one from HMRC?

Bulk issue is normally made in Feb / Mar each year. If not - yes, just contact HMRC. You could simply ask what the extra is for (basic is 747L) in your Code?
